Clout is taking its show, “Flynch, Looking” to the Edinburgh Fringe Festival this August. Venue booked and rehearsals are under way!
The Edinburgh Fringe Festival: One of the most renowned theatre festivals in the world, the fringe is a great opportunity for theatre makers to create, show their work and make a name for themselves. Last year there were about 2,400 shows -- an extraordinary amount for a one-month festival -- which makes us all the more motivated to raise enough money to promote the show through newspaper ads, posters and flyers! Our company has been selected by the up-and-coming Zoo Venues in the heart of Edinburgh to perform six days a week from August 5th to the 29th. We have put down the initial payment on the venue so with your help the rest of the way, we are set to perform at the Fringe in August!
About Clout: Formed after having studied and collaborated at the Jacques Lecoq Theatre School in Paris, France, this international group of theatre artists share a goal: to create theatre that can weave the exterior façade of our everyday selves with a heightened and stylized dramatization of the tumultuous yet often dormant underbelly of human nature. This leads us from humor to tragedy and back again, in the hopes that we can make our theatre relatable, amusing and evocative to our audience members. We hope that you will cringe, laugh and reflect!
About our show: “Flynch, Looking” is a piece that was originally inspired by the short stories of the late Polish writer Bruno Schulz and is currently being co-written, directed and performed by all five company members. While keeping the flavor of Schulz’s gritty and fantastical world intact, our constant devising and exploration in the rehearsal process over the last few months has lead us to thematically design the show around the five senses and their relationship to emotion, memory and imagination. Using this as a springboard, the story follows the title character, Flynch, and his obsession with a lost love. Trying to forget about her and start anew (but nonetheless carrying her last letter to him) Flynch winds up in a seaside hotel in a quaint town in England. Here he meets other guests who are all out on a “mission” of their own and as their interactions increase, so does their comfort level with one another. With the help of the hotel bar, they slowly begin to slip into a fantastic delirium, acting out old hopes, new desires and everything in between. Interweaving movement, text, object manipulation, naturalistic and stylized performances and underscored by music ranging from the composer Bartok to Tears for Fears to original scores that will be composed for the play by collaborating musicians, “Flynch, Looking” captures the complex human condition by exploring who we appear to be and who we really are.
