Cross-cultural, bridge-building social circus performanceproject that promotes peace through pyramids and harmony through handsprings!
PEACE THROUGH PYRAMIDS
Help bring the Jewish/Arab Galilee Circus to America, this July!
In 2007, Circus Harmony's youth circus troupe, the St. Louis Arches, made their first journey to Israel to meet and work with the Jewish/Arab Galilee Circus. In the words of Rabbi Marc Rosenstein: " I think many who saw the shows felt the same tears in their eyes maybe out of the feeling one is seeing a vision of something that we all long for... the total obliteration of barriers, whether social, economic or gravitational."
Peaceful co-existence between Jews and Arabs in Israel seems more precarious than ever. Racial divide in the United States continues to grow. Circus Harmony in America and the Galilee Foundation for Value Education in Israel have an unusual approach to the serious social issue of deep rooted racial/cultural fear and distrust. Both organizations have created circus troupes of children from different backgrounds who would not normally learn and work together. Being in a circus troupe together, the young people get to know each other and are put in a position of communicating with and trusting each other. They learn that they are more alike then different. They learn they CAN trust each other and, in fact, become close friends. Then they create an awe-inspiring show and ‘take it to the streets’.
Since 2007 , the Arches have been to Israel twice. The Galilee children were in St. Louis in 2008. Circus Harmony is asking for support for Peace Through Pyramids to bring the Israeli troupe here, this summer, so they can work with our St. Louis Arches to create and present shows throughout the St. Louis area. These remarkable young people show the world that it really doesn't matter where you are from or what your background is, it is who YOU are and what YOU do that makes a difference. This cross-cultural,bridge-building social circus project demonstrates in a breath-taking way what can happen when people of different nationalities and backgrounds build something together. These are only children--- but they have a lot to teach the rest of the world.
The St. Louis Arches are made up of children aged 12 – 19 who come from a variety of neighborhoods and socio-economic backgrounds. The Galilee Circus youth are Jews and Arabs from the north of Israel. Audience members who will witness the shows will be from all walks of life. The public shows at City Museum will be seen by hundreds of people from around the world. The shows we will set up in and around St. Louis will be in a variety of venues to get this incredible example seen by as many people as possible. The two troupes will work together to create their acts and show--- an amazing process to watch as English, Hebrew, Arabic and Spanish are used to communicate along with plenty of physical demonstrating.
The goal of Peace Though Pyramids is, quite simply, to do Tikkun Olam--- to help repair the world. We start with the individual children in the project. They share their experience with their friends and families. Through the public performances, the CIRCUS KIDS documentary, discussion panels and the kids spending non-circus time with each other, they demonstrate to the world what is possible. Having an urban black boy hold a suburban white girl on his shoulders, or having a Jewish child sleep over at Arab kid’s house may seem like a drop in the bucket of co-existence. But we hope the drops will accumulate. We can give numerous examples that show how this project has been life-changing for a number of the participants and inspirational for thousands of audience members.
We believe the path to peace is a path of cooperation and communication. Teaching children from different backgrounds how to stand on each other’s shoulders may seem like a strange way to take this path. But it’s the technique we use! The Peace Through Pyramids project promotes peace though pyramids, joy though juggling and harmony through handsprings.
Please spread the word and help make this year's Peace Through Pyramids Project possible!
