Imagination and Education come together! Art lessons designed for any teacher, in a home school environment, as well as a great a gift!
Imagination and Education come together in my book, “just do art”. As public schools suffer through endless budget reductions, art is usually one of the first programs to be cut. "just do art" is designed to be used in schools by classroom teachers, or in a home school environment. It is also a wonderful gift for anyone who would like to "just do art". The projects are inexpensive, educational and fun with step by step guides that are easy to follow!
I was an elementary school art teacher for the last 10 years and have over 40 art projects. I am currently teaching a group of 25 children, between the ages of 5 and 11 and filming them creating their art for the book and videos. My plan is to write three to five books for my series and support the books with a website and video lessons. With the help of Kickstarter, I can finish my book and website.
What We Have
The book has three chapters completed with the graphic design and layout done. We have finished one "how to" video for the website and with the help of friends, have filmed the students working on another ten art projects. To date, among the artist’s I have featured are, Michelangelo, da Vinci, Marc Chagall, Pablo Picasso, Frida Kahlo, and Roy Lichtenstein, just to name a few. We have also begun to video tape the studio side which involves a step by step demonstration of how to do each art project.
What We Need
The funds raised will be used for the following expenses:
Video equipment and editing.
Art historian who is writing all original biographies.
Printing and self publishing for the 3,000 copies of the book.
Art supplies for the children so they could create their art for the book. And most importantly, treats for Lola the art dog, who plays a key role in the book.
People on My Team
Linda Huntington, long time friend and manager for this project. Mark Neal, is the director and videographer. Juliet DeMarco, editor of the videos, and creator/singer of the song used in the Kickstarter video. Simone DeMarco is the art director for the videos in the classroom as well as still photographer. Autumn Valjien, social net worker and Logo designer. Christopher Brereton, web-designer and graphic artist. Terry Hull, is the art historian and writer of not only the artist bio's, but also incorporating the "fun facts" for each artists. Paige Smith, administrator and social net-worker. MichElle DeMarco, my research assistant. Of course, Lola, the art dog, who is available to give us hints about art throughout the book.
And a BIG Thank You to Pat Cairns, for just saying "yes"
This is a great question! Out there in the world the book could never cost that much, even though it is filled with beautiful color photographs of children’s art, which of course is “priceless”.
Included in with the rewards is my first educational video, as well as PDF lessons. Incorporated into my costs are the following; director-videographer, editor, art historian, graphic artist Trademark Attorney and supplies. In regards to the book, let me explain what is inside.
I wanted to offer the highest quality tangible book I could make for my rewards. The paper I’m using to create “just do art” the book, is over sized at 11x14 with 100 pound weight, similar to card stock. I chose a semi-gloss over standard copy paper. I decided against the high gloss paper as it was too shiny and seemed to reflect any lights that are in the room.
Each chapter represents a well know artist, history, fun facts and step by step guides. I’ve just completed everything for the third chapter, so I have figured there should be between 45-55 pages per book. I believe that when studying the examples, it is better to make the book spiral bound verses soft bound.
I have interviewed several printing companies, and have chosen a company that was actually 400 miles from here because they assured me they can stay close to the colors I have chosen. After reading Steve Jobs’ biography and discovering that there are over 3,000 shades just of the color beige, I needed to go see that printer in person.
Now, to answer your great question; if I were to have a printer reproduce the book, using standard copy paper, at the regular size, the book would run around 10.00 each for printing and binding. That would make them around 20.00 retail, plus distribution costs. I would like to self publish so that I can maintain artistic control of what the book looks and feels like. Since Kickstarter is new to me and I can’t predict how my project will be received, I have no idea if I will be printing be only one book or five hundred! So, I had to take into consideration the cost of a small run at the quality that I want. The printing costs, all in, are about 30.00 per book. When I go to self-publish, I will look at what it costs for a higher run, because I know the costs will go down dramatically.
I know that if I will be producing to school districts as well as home school programs the cost of each book will have to be between $8.00 and $10.00 each to produce, or $16.00 – $20.00 retail. The good news is when they are for a classroom, the teacher will only one book for the entire class!
In all, a $100.00 dollar donation more than pays for a single book, and it also helps put money towards the overall cost of the project. I hope that explains things a little better. Please feel free to ask me any questions! This was great, as I will add this information onto my home page on Kick.
