Help us to make children's books as fascinating as a pair of the latest sneakers and to bring tangible art forms back to the community!
We come to kickstarter because this children's and young teens' book store, needs a new look. this is an opportunity for you to make children's literacy as valued as the newest pair of sneakers. We desire a trendy looking store that puts literature along with tangible- handmade art on sleek pedestals and modern shelves.
With your support we can bring a passion for history and culture to teens and parents who may have never thought about these things.
The store will feature autographed children's books and handmade products at a reasonable price. Additionally the mall's management is fine with bringing in creative friends to do weekend long intensive workshops. It would be a fulfillment of a dream for us to teach the community to stop buying back their own culture from corporations. Most of the expensive items they wait in a line for, can easily be made or personalized with their own creativity. I miss the days when kids would buy a brand, then paint it, tear it, sew it and redesign it in to their own expression.
Workshops teaching book-binding,painting,t-shirt production, silk screening, even computer and cell phone cover design painting will be offered. I will have something to teach any aspiring art student or curious craft enthusiast.
This will be the first store of many, we hope to make a franchise out of this but for now it's a Decatur, Georgia aspiration in a site that needs a serious makeover.
No, but it's important to know that the store will only be stocked with the owner's 28 various titles(and counting). His main career is as a children's book illustrator, so the choices to choose from are growing. The current books range in subject's such as a little Pakistani girl afraid of chickens, to a book for kids about the Haitian revolution. These are what will be always in stock, but what will be sold on a periodic basis are autographed books by any artist, author or local crafts person that is willing to come in for a monthly registered weekend workshop. The idea of GAS - ART GIFTS' books, is to have a very personal connection to any book sold because you will get it directly from the artist.
Hardly...We are talking about literacy in the age of the internet and text talk ..LOL.. Additionally funding to libraries and schools have abated to the point...JSMH... that the sales are just not there, so books are going out of print, libraries and book stores are closing! This is an opportunity to repackage literacy, history and cultural lessons. A way to rethink the model of how to present and connect it to people of ALL ages by using art and creativity. But it's going to take a community effort to really get things branded and advertised because the owner is working on a very small budget.
Gas-Art Gifts is a limited liability company owned by the children's book illustrator. R. Gregory Christie. GAS stands for Gregarious Art Statements and is the acronym that represents Mr. Christie's website www.gas-art.com
It's a book shop, open studio, unique gift store and place to take 4 week long workshop classes focusing on handmade creativity. The idea of GAS- ART GIFTS is that people can find their inner artist if inspired by tangible things, published children's books and a good teacher.
Ever see people waiting in line for the next gadget, sleeping out in the rain to buy something that ..as any artist and craft's person will tell you, could easily be reproduced or personalized by the purchaser. One idea of this store is to countenance's the love of electronic (e- things) things with a love of literacy, history, culture and the various hand-making art forms. Another ideas is to help teens and adults consider that corporations are selling the innovations from their own culture right back to them.
Literacy is taking a new form for some people, dying for others. $23,000 is to start this from the top. It's a chance to have a solid stock of merchandise, a publicist, a designer to remake the store..put in a new floor, new lights, and to give the store an aesthetic that will attract young people. Even a pledge of $10 will eventually find it's way back to the community. The owner plans to work with libraries, schools, churches and local radio in order to get this space self functioning. To be able to do this there will be the need for an employee, freelance graphic designer and student promoters. We will pay students and local professionals after taking time to interview them, to help build this endeavor. It takes a full time effort to get the word out, create interesting art, organize workshops, and to grow. Paid assistance for specialist in each field will be needed. But this stepping stone of sponsorship will allow the mission of the store to get back to the community in action and finance.
