Right now, there is something new and exciting happening in the New York City Performing Arts world, and here is an opportunity to actually say… “I helped make it happen.”
When you contribute to our KickStarter campaign, you help guarantee that we have the foundation necessary to make Subterranea a spectacular success. We invite you to be an integral part of the hottest thing in New York City performing arts and share the thrill of making theatrical history.
Suspended Cirque is New York City’s first Aerial Acrobatics Theater troupe, presenting a genre of performance that integrates breathtaking aerial acrobatics, theater, choreography, music, dance, and circus. As Artists-in-Residence at the Galapagos Arts Space for the past three seasons, we have dedicated ourselves to presenting original and imaginative shows that are affordable to families and theater-goers in the Big Apple.
After our previous success in Brooklyn, we are pushing the envelope even further with our most ambitious and creative show ever — appearing for the first time in Manhattan for a full two-week run at the Connelly Theater (April 28 to May 8).
Our newest production… Subterranea: An Urban Fairytale, combines our unique aerial/theatrical talents to convey the drama of a man lost in a mythical underworld filled with sultry sirens and mischievous creatures.
This newest endeavor will be produced solely by Suspended Cirque, with the generous donations of supporters like you. We have already raised over half of the necessary funds, and with your help we will make this show happen.
To kick us off to a great start, we are not seeking the entire $20,000 budget for the show – we have set a modest base upon which we can build, in the goal amount of just $5,000. Any pledges made that push us above $5,000 can and will go directly to the making of Subterranea.

WHAT YOUR SUPPORT WILL DO
For the making of Subterranea, we have enlisted the help of some top-notch Broadway professionals to assist us in raising the production value of our show; beginning with our director Andrew Oswald, who directs his original creation of this urban fairy tale. (Andrew most recently directed “As I Am Fully Known” in the New York Fringe Festival) We have also engaged composer Jeff Halpern to create original music and lyrics, as well as lighting designer Andrew J. White with his dazzling lighting displays, and costume designer Chasity Neutze with her gorgeous garments.
Please help Suspended Cirque make this leap to Manhattan a huge success, and bring this Subterranea world to life with your generous contributions. These donations will directly support this production in the following ways:
- Costume development (Chasity Neutze – Asst. designer for B'way Mamma Mia)
- Creating and recording of original music and sound track (Jeff Halpern – musical director for The Secret Garden national tour, and Beauty and the Beast, LA)
- Set design and creation
- Lighting (Andrew J. White – Asst. design for B'way Hair)
- Defraying cost of theater rental

In New York City, Suspended Cirque was the first theater company using circus acts to convey a comprehensible and human narrative. Using a unique creative process, Suspended Cirque company members create his/her own role within the greater context of the show, as well as create the individual acts. Having the same person act as the playwright and the performer, actor and acrobat, guarantees their personality shows and is amplified in the final character. Never does a Suspended Cirque performer simply execute a series of tricks. Instead, Suspended Cirque performers express parts of him/herself. The audience feels genuinely connected to the individual members of the company, sometimes being inspired to reach out and touch them in this dynamic exploration of Art imitating Life.
Suspended Cirque was founded by five veterans of the performing arts world – Joshua Dean, Michelle Dortignac, Benjamin Franklin, Angela Jones and Kristin Olness. Members have been seen on Broadway in Cabaret, The Joyce Theater, Lincoln Center, and performed with such names as Twyla Tharp. Between the five of them, a wide range of artistic skill is represented, including but not limited to Broadway-style singing, championship acrobatics, playing the classical clarinet, and Japanese Butoh movement. Suspended Cirque members capitalize on their breadth of knowledge and skill in every production they create.
