Help cover the cost of the artwork, production and publicity for Erik's new CD "Anti-Mass", which features his original compositions.
Hello, and thanks for checking out my kickstarter page! I'm trying to raise money to release and promote my newest CD "Anti-Mass", a chamber-jazz concept album of my String-tet playing music that was inspired by artwork from the DeYoung Museum in San Francisco. You can be a big part of this by donating to this project. But first, please read a little bit about the history of this music...
I'm a trumpeter, composer and educator based in the San Francisco Bay Area. Back in 2007, I had just graduated from the San Francisco Conservatory of Music with a Master's Degree in composition, and wanted to combine some of the classical music influences I had been studying with the jazz, funk and latin music I had been playing professionally since 1995. I decided to put together a new ensemble that had the flexibility to go in these different musical directions: the String-tet. With an instrumentation of trumpet, tenor sax, violin, viola, string bass, and drums doubling on vibraphone, this group had a lot of musical flexibility.
While preparing to do my very first concert with the String-tet at the DeYoung Museum in 2007, (captured online here) I received a grant from Intersection of the Arts and the DeYoung Museum to write a composition inspired by a piece of artwork in the permanent collection at the DeYoung. Wandering the museum in search of inspiration, I came across an amazing installation: "Anti-Mass", created by the British artist Cornelia Parker. I knew immediately that this was the piece for me to interpret musically, and after sketching out some themes and musical ideas in the museum, I raced home to complete the composition, which ended up being about 15 minutes long.
We played that composition, also called "Anti-Mass", at our concert at the DeYoung, and I had a blast! I found the process of composing music inspired by artwork and architecture so rewarding that I decided to create an entire album of compositions based on artwork in the DeYoung, and by the DeYoung's surroundings. With the blessing of the folks at the museum, I visited the museum again to find more inspiring artwork, and, again, to sketch melodies and textures down in my notepad while viewing the pieces in the museum. I finished the compositions ("The Cello Player", "Silence", "Portrait of Miss D", "Stontium", and "Afternoon on the Sea, Monhegan") at home, and with the help of a Musical Performance Grant from the San Francisco Friends of Chamber Music, was able to record the String-tet in July of 2011.
The musicians on the recording are Dayna Stephens on tenor sax, Mads Tolling on violin, Charith Premawardhana on viola, John Wiitala on bass, Smith Dobson on drums and vibraphone, and myself on trumpet and flugelhorn. We spent two days recording at Fantasy studios, and I'm really proud of the music that we created. I want to share it with as many people as possible, and that's where you come in!
Now that the album has been mixed, the cover art is finished, and I have a graphic designer lined up, I need to raise money to finish the album in time for the release date of August 2012. The money that you contribute will help cover the costs of mastering the album, producing the physical copies of the album, paying for the graphic design, and hiring a publicist to promote the album so that it will get the attention it deserves. Please donate as little or as much as you can, it will all help.
