Capoeira is a result of the African Diaspora. This project will facilitate how can it be used as a tool for growth of the community.
This project will use Capoeira , an art that is the result of the African Diaspora, as a tool to bring awareness to one of the strongest manifestations of cultural resistance to the enslavement of African people in the Americas. The U.S. and Brazil both share the stain of African slavery. It is resistance against enslavement, oppression, and discrimination that unites people of African descent. Through performances and presentations to the Bay area community, we hope to promote this art forms, but more importantly to produce change in all of the participant's minds (it's history), body (in its movements and music), and spirit (it's life lessons of dealing with oppression and discrimination).
Leading performances and presentations will be a masters who comes from lineages rich in Capoeira. Mestre Nenel, son of the famous Mestre Bimba, creator of “Capoeira Regional”. Mestre Nenel is following the paternal footsteps, he is carrying out Mestre Bimba's wish of spreading Capoeira all over the world, preserving the heritage by teaching his father’s philosophy and principles. Another renowned Capoeira Mestre from Salvador, Brazil is Mestre Jogo de Dentro. He is the top student of the late Mestre Joao Pequeno and his work comes from the direct lineage of Mestre Pastinha. He preserves the traditions of capoeira angola . Though they are mestres of different styles, they share the belief that Capoeira is for everyone regardless of religion, age, color or sex.
