About this project
Hi-dee-ho, Buddios! We're family entertainers Janet Marie & m'Archibald and finally after years and years of hoping and dreaming and planning and preparing we're just about ready to pitch our goofy goblin alter-egos Boogah & Hoogah for children's TV.
These are really lovable characters, the stories and situations presented in our shows are contagiously engaging, the songs stick in your head like a wet tongue on a frozen flagpole, the costumes and sets are silly and spooky and just plain giddy. AND every time we visit with our audiences after our live shows we keep hearing "you should be on TV". So we're doing our best to make that happen...with your help.
A little background on the characters and the shows before we get down on one knee:
In the autumn of 1988, a very nice lady named Sheila Ingerswen, the family events coordinator at the Edsel & Eleanor Ford House in Grosse Pointe Shores Michigan, wanted to present a Halloween performance event for families in a similar style to the very successful "Imagine That!" concerts we'd done for her. We suggested that it be hosted by some childlike, silly-spooky characters, presenting Halloween songs and stories for young children and their families. Sheila enthusiastically agreed, and we got to work.
The names of the title characters came from the old joke (knock knock. who's there? Boo! Boo who?) So we had Boo, the "boy" goblin, and Hoo, the "her" goblin, who had "gah" added to the end of their names to make them sound more goblin-ey. As we got to know them we discovered that their hometown is a tiny village called Schpottsylvania, that they have a wherewoof puppy named Woofie, a vegetarian vampire neighbor called Count Drincula, a green monster pal named Frankie (who bears a resemblance to both Frankenstein's monster and Elvis) an elfish ballerina named Bippety, and a number of other magical family, friends and neighbors, who as a group are known as The Boo Crew.
The show takes place in the Rumpus Room of their Haunted House, an imagination headquarters that bears some slight resemblance (and a large homage) to a certain Captain's Treasure House from the television fare of our childhood. In the Rumpus Room reside a talking mantel clock, a pair of wise cracking joke-o-lanterns, and the most recent additions, The Band in the Box (three tiny musicians that jam along from inside an antique gramophone) and The Othervator, an enchanted transporter that takes Boogah and Hoogah anywhere they can imagine.
For fifteen days every October, Boogah and Hoogah, and the rest of their Boo Crew, move the Rumpus Room, and all the fun, onto the Castle Stage in the North Grand Court of Somerset Collection, a grand and gorgeous shopping center in Troy, Michigan. Hundreds of kids and their families enjoy playing and singing along with them every day, and as we said, after each performance we hear that the show is so much fun, and so well produced that it ought to be on TV.
So here's the pitch: We're told that much of the success of a video lies in how finished the product appears before it's actually done (weird, ay?) so we scraped together all the money we could, called in a lot of favors, and then did our best to write, compose, design, direct, construct, perform and film the best performance we could do on a shoestring. We're really proud of that "Boogah and the Fibosaurus" production, but we know we need to make an even more polished product on this second outing. We're using "B&tF" to shop the series to backers, but in the meantime, we want to make the first episode of the series as polished as we possibly can. Whatever help you can offer in making this happen will be greatly appreciated by Boogah & Hoogah, Janet Marie & m'Archibald, and loads of the kids that we fondly call "our little monsters". We all Thank You in advance!!!

Hi, I'm Donovan McCarty. I'm a musician and film-maker, and this couple of characters are my mom and dad, Janet Marie & m'Archibald (sometimes also known as Boogah & Hoogah) and they play for a living. Seriously.
Here, in their own words, is a really short version of their story:
"We started this adventure In the fall of 1987 while we were still the company manager and prop master/stage manager for Michigan Opera Theatre. As part of our jobs each springtime we had the opportunity to take a cast of professional opera singers, an accompanist, sets, props, and costumes around our home state of Michigan, rehearsing local choruses into the shows, and putting on live performances during the week for school kids, and at the end of the week for the whole community. One year, while touring Hansel and Gretel, we worked almost exclusively with kids...on stage and in the audience...and we LOVED it. It was at this point that we decided we wanted to concentrate our efforts on performing for kids and their families. And we wanted to move away from "the classics" and toward our own original material.
So, on weekends and after work we made costumes and props, wrote and rehearsed scripts and songs, and began doing sing-along, play-along shows for family and friends in a style we called Musical-Story-Theatre...which is really just our brand of kid-friendly Musical Theater.
Those living-room shows slowly but surely grew and traveled to elementary school gyms and cafetoriums, then to libraries and theaters and festivals, then to the center courts of major regional shopping centers, and to some of the most snazzy cultural institutions in our state. It was at one of those cultural institutions, Edsel & Eleanor Ford House, that Boogah & Hoogah first came to life as our alter-ego hosts of the Halloween version of our show.
That was 1988, and every year since then at our new Halloween home, Somerset Collection in Troy, Michigan, our audiences keep saying "we can't believe you're not on TV yet!" Well, this project is our attempt to (finally!!!) remedy that situation."
