Through three individual vignettes, Sita uncovers the different faces of commercial surrogacy in India.
What is this film about?
Sita is a film about an Indian woman doctor and her patient, Sita, as both women get embroiled in the seedy underbelly of the commercial surrogacy industry. Driven by the moral compass of the doctor, the film culminates in tragic irony when the body of a young girl and Sita's rented womb becomes the site for the opposing narratives on female reproduction.
Why should you support this film?
Commercial surrogacy can be a blessing for couples struggling with infertility. However, the recent surge of unregulated "womb-renting" in India has uncovered reports of exploitation of the surrogates.
Not only does this short film raise questions about the commodification of a third world female body but also critiques the global economic structure that allows for an American to rent the womb of an Indian woman. Through the dilemma of an IVF doctor the film raises seminal questions about subaltern rights, gender rights, and reproductive technology.
To support Sita is to take a step towards creating awareness and shaping public opinion for a stronger legal framework in India that will protect the rights of women who decide to become surrogates.
Can you pledge to the project if you are not in the U.S.?
Yes, you can pledge from anywhere. Kickstarter uses the Amazon Payments Service to ensure a safe and secure transaction.
Who does the money go to?
Every penny (minus the fees for Kickstarter’s involvement) will go directly to the the film's budget - i.e. Your money goes directly to the funding of this film.
Here is a basic breakdown:
- Equipment Rental (5D camera rig, lenses, HMI lights, lavs, dolly, etc): $2,500
- Location scouting and rental : $ 500
- Art Direction: $ 500
- Cast and Crew fee: $2000
- Food for the Cast and Crew: $500
What happens if the money isn’t raised in time?
Kickstarter has an all-or-nothing funding model. That means if we don’t raise $6000 by 8 p.m. P.S.T. on August, 9th the film will get nothing. Your pledged amounts will be returned to you and the film will not get made.
We want to avoid this scenario at all costs! No contribution is minor. Your support will help us make this film!
