About this project
Here below a video of Painting in New York group members Tyler Loftis, Chris Protas and Dov Talpaz speaking to the students at the New York Studio School on April 22. Regarding the upcoming show and this project.
To all our backers: thank you VERY MUCH for your participation so far!!! We are VERY grateful and inspired!!
We would like to update you on our progress:
- The catalog is currently being printed.
- We are about to close on a location for the show, a very beautiful space located in a prime area of NYC.
But... the space is more expensive than we anticipated, so we are utilizing the remaining time to reach a new goal of 10,000. So help spread the word! We are all looking forward to making original artwork in return for your pledges!!

Painting in New York
We have this vision for a show, a great show here in the city, put on independently. Its a grass-roots idea we have been working on for 14 years, to share our paintings in the best context that we can. We are seven artists, we've had 4 shows since 2004 and now its time for our 5th! With each show there has been a push forward, there have been 1 or 2 other featured artists, and each one has represented a new development. (see recent work and previous shows at paintinginny.com)
Whats new about this next one..?
Lori Bookstein and Lauren Bakoian of Lori Bookstein Fine Art (loribooksteinfineart.com) are curating the show, writer/critic Jennifer Samet is producing an essay for a self-published 24 page catalog (we are currently designing it and it will go to print soon) and we are scheduled to give a panel lecture at the New York Studio School prior to the opening.
What we do not yet have..
What we dont yet have is funding for the space and professional advertising. We will go on a campaign of guerilla advertising in many creative ways, but we're also going to use some traditional forms. We want to reach as many of you as we can!
The solution..
Our target is $6000. We are very grateful for any amount pledged and for that reason we're looking forward to giving you drawings and paintings in exchange, and everyone's names will be on the "Thanks to these participants" list at the show!
Your pledges will help us to:
-Produce a thousand copies of a 24 page, bound, full color, highest-resolution exhibition catalog, our first catalog of the shows.
-Hire a publicist to advertise in newspapers, blogs, websites and to reach as many people as possible.
-Pay for a space for 10 days that is appropriate for this new level of collaboration, and will showcase the paintings in the best possible way.
-To cover production costs, from printing the invitations to lighting the work.
We are looking forward to bringing this show to life and seeing all of you at the opening!!

We are seven artists (sometimes more) who live and paint in New York. We had four shows over the course of the last eight, about every two years since 2004. Our upcoming fifth show is scheduled for late in May, 2011.
