Help us finalize and present our work: “Year Cycle,” and instillation for electronic music and photography.

Help us finalize and present our work: “Year Cycle” for mixed media. Sarah Alexander and I have been working on collecting audio and photographic recordings of different things that remind us of specific seasons. The initial idea for the piece was mine, but it is a collaboration piece and something that I merely suggested to her. The central idea is to create a work that depicted the movement of the seasons. In order to attempt to create a more natural feeling within the piece, a system of randomization has been developed within the program. The randomization first selects sounds and images. These are then sent through a second randomization process, distorting and manipulating the sounds and hopefully the images as well.

This piece is a multi-media collaboration production, one of very few that I have seen here in Lubbock. The piece is run with a computer program called MAX/MSP. For the audio, the program randomly selects sound files that have been preloaded, and then randomly distorts them. For the photographs, the program will be preloaded with Quicktime videos generated using no less than 300 photographs per season; these will then be randomly selected and displayed on three screens. The design of the program allows for the piece to be played for long periods of time (the basic full cycle to approximately 80 minutes) with each cycle being different due to the randomization.

Because of the need for hardware, space, and time; we are asking for $3000. This will help us make sure that we have the ability to set up this piece as an instillation. The piece is scheduled to be finished in the spring of 2013. The specific designs for the piece will make it portable and easily set up in many different locations. Look for the piece to be set up during the First Friday Art Trail, for those of you in Lubbock. There are several other locations which we will be asking to have this piece set up, please keep following us to see where we are being displayed.

FAQ

  • This project is difficult to assign a clear meaning. The aesthetic ideas relate to the experience of a year, including the sense of similarity (through the use of repeating sound banks for each season) while still maintaining the sense of randomness that is present in nature.

The underlying reason to approach this project in this way is to promote collaboration between the arts. This project is a gateway to more collaboration projects in the future, as well as a gateway into the electronic arts that are not as present in this area.
