Issue #1 - Surf's Up: The Beginning

What the hell is a SURFER BAT?

Woahhh! Chill out dude! The Southern California Surfer Bats are the heros of my new comic book series! Play the KICKSTARTER VIDEO for the theme song summary of what it's all about.

What is it similar to?

I'd say the best description of the Southern California Surfer Bats is a mash up of Back to the Future, Gargoyles, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, and Battle Toads.

Why do the Southern California Surfer Bats have a Kickstarter project?

This project was created to fund the production costs of the first issue (origin story) of the Southern California Surfer Bats comic book. This is one issue of a 3 part mini-series that will be combined later into a single graphic novel. There will be spin off series based on each issue.

• ISSUE #1 - Origin story of the heros and villains (play Kickstarter video for the synopsis)

• ISSUE #2 - Time travel adventures collecting stuff they need to repair their spaceship
• ISSUE #3 - The Surfer Bats time travel back to their home planet to battle the TBD to try and save their home planet

Why do you need my money?

We are hoping to give you a killer comic book in a multitude of formats in exchange for helping us raise enough money to:

• Pay for first run printing expenses so we can get a copy of the comic book to all the comic book stores int he US and get into Diamond Comics distribution services to reach the masses.

• Pay the $1000 Comic Con booth fee so we can host a booth at Comic Con 2013 and give away free comic books, gear, and video games!
• Help create Standees (cardboard cut outs of the Surfer Bat characters) for photo ops at appearances.
• STRETCH GOALS: 8-Bit Video Game of the Southern California Surfer Bats.

Here is the series synopsis:

One late night in 1989, a 28 year old surfing bodybuilder from Venice Beach discovers three alien-mutated bats in an underground cavern. Together they experience action-packed comedic adventures on the their surfboard time machines while collecting materials to repair their spaceship, as well as, fix time ripples and other havoc created by the evil Dr. Sinclair and his goons. After the spaceship is finally repaired and Dr. Sinclair has been put away for good, they discover their captain had survived the crash and joins them on a mission to travel back and save their home planet.

Who the hell are you?

Woah dude, you're still pretty grouchy, but hey no prob. Here's a little about me...

My name is Ryan Shepard and I am the creator and writer of the Southern California Surfer Bats comic book series. My 9-5 job may be a Theme Park Engineer, but this project is my 5-9 and I'm very passionate about it!

Why do you even want to make this weird @$$ comic book?

It combines all of our favorite things - mutants, time travel, surfing, fighting, engineering, Venice Beach, the 1980's, aliens, spaceships, etc., into one bad @$$ adventure.

The goal of this project is to provide an experience for the reader to escape from a stressful or boring time and take a short fun time travel adventure via one of these comic books!

You aren't even a real artist!?

I've been drawing and dreaming my whole life, does that not make me an artist? What is art? Anyways, don't worry, I hired a professional artist. I rough pencil out the comic book and lay it out on paper as I envision it. Next, the amazing stylized artist Ian Crowe (www.iancrowe.com), turns my ideas, scripts, and pencil sketches into a radical comic book.

I will use print-on-demand services for producing regular prints, have pdfs versions available through the website, and a downloadable iOS app version in the App Store. All versions are planned to have a free version with advertising and an upgradable (for a small fee) version that is ad-free.

The funds raised will cover illustration and production costs.

The more funds that are raised, the more comics we can produce.
