and CSS, and WordPress Basics ... all through the power of COMICS!
Follow the adventures of Nate and Kim while they navigate the world of Web.
Nate is an Apple-Certified trainer that teaches people about how to build websites. He is a Master Teacher at Skillshare and runs Pedestrian Consulting in New York City. He regularly offers several classes about web basics including Website Bootcamp for Creative Professionals and WordPress.org vs WordPress.com: I need a website. Now what? in New York City.
Kim is a Brooklyn-based comic artist and owner of Kim Gee Comics. She maintains an autobiographical web comic updated twice weekly. Her comics appear at select independent bookstores across the country, as well as the Lush Comics HD iPad app and Barnard Zine Library in New York City. She has studied Communication Design and Fashion Illustration at the Fashion Institute of Technology and is pursuing a career in the arts.
As part of teaching his Website Bootcamp class Nate has been compiling a large amount of notes to help non-developers learn basic web concepts. He approached Kim Gee, an amazing graphic artist, with the idea of turning the content into a web comic. The idea being that if the concepts were made entertaining and straightforward, students would find learning more enjoyable and be able to retain the information.
We are doing a Kickstarter to raise the funds to pay for Kim's artwork which is very reasonable considering her talent. We hope that we can generate enough pre-sales of the comic to justify seeing it through completion. Assuming there's an audience, we should be able to get the book done in a very short time frame. Do you believe in us? Would you read this awesome comic that teaches you stuff at the same time it entertains you? Then back our project!
Praise for Nate (Author):
“Nate had a very straightforward approach making the content not only accessible, but turning it into an enjoyable experience. If one thing holds true, it is that you really do end up leaving with (at least) having learned one thing. I was really motivated to get started on my new website after bootcamp!”
- Kelvin X Dume, Student Website Bootcamp for Creative Professionals
“Played well to the general interests, knowledge level and pace of grasping information of the students. nice job explaining the broad world of web development/design as well as demoing detailed coding examples. two opposable thumbs up.”
- Jonathan Schwartz, Student Website Bootcamp for Creative Professionals
“This was a very informative and good class. Lot of technical stuff also but Nate explained it in a way that even a designer can understand it. Very useful information and lots of good resources. All the questions I had got answered. I'm excited to use the knowledge I learned in this class.”
- Herta Kriegner, Student Website Bootcamp for Creative Professionals
“Nate is a keen and creative tech thinker with warm personality and a sense of humor. He is a coordinator who is very talented for connecting people and creating social value. Nate is an awesome co-worker and is always willing to help. He is very committed to his job and once he is working on a new project or a new event he will always make sure thing are done perfectly.”
- Jihyung Kim, Marketing Coordinator New Work City
Praise for Kim (Artist):
"I’m always thrilled when I come across something like your comic, which seems to use drawing as a means of quickly and effectively communicating real stories and emotions. I read the whole thing from cover to cover, and that’s more than I can say for a lot of the stuff that shows up in my p.o. box! I hope you stick with it, and I’ll keep an eye out for your future work.
- Adrian Tomine
"I am impressed with both your dating prowess and your prolific comic output. You can use that as a quote on that back of your book sometime."
"Got a new comic in the mail from @kimgeesays...devoured it immediately! I can't tell you how much I enjoy reading about her love life!"
"Kim, I am not just saying this. Honestly, I freakin love your comics. I think I have a thing for autobiographical comics. And you pull it off really well. Once or twice, I found myself hating some of the characters, almost yelling at them."
"i've seriously been up allllll night reading your comic! its incredibly addicting and wonderful!"
That's the idea. The comic is based upon a manuscript Nate spent writing over several months and has been added to over the course of several weeks teaching real people just like you how to build a website. The ideas contained herein are mostly conceptual with a lot of references to external sources in order to learn more. It's a kind of tips and tricks version of website building that covers a broad range of topics from HTML to SEO to CMS. By putting it in comic form we hope to make it easier to digest for the causal reader/beginner.
