I'm creating a large mural of Dogs Playing poker in laser-cut acrylic with 3D layering. Dog breeds chosen by backers!

Vote Update as of Oct 26th..........

500 Sam, the ugliest dog in the world (google it)
500 Cockapoo
100 Lhasa Apso Poo
 80 Red Fox
 55 Mini Goldendoodle
 27 Yorkie
 20 Boxer
 6 Black Lab
 5 Italian Greyhound
 5 White German Shepard
 5 Sheep Dog
 5 Jack Russell Terrier
 13 Undecided

The Red Fox just edged out the Goldendoodle out of the top four! Top four of the moment get the spots along with the Artist's chosen dog, the Doberman. Keep the votes coming!

Quick and Dirty......

I'm going to do a layered version on Dogs Playing Poker in laser cut acrylic. The final project will be quite large (3 x 5', or 4 x 6', depending on the style of laser I end up getting.) It will have multiple layers and colors and will be capped off in an acrylic frame. The idea will be to have all of the layers come together so that every individual object is seamless.

The edge of the frame will have all of the backers' names etched in it as well. Take a look at some of the rewards to see how I'm going to do that.

Once I have the funding, it will probably take a month or two to do the design. There will be a lot of experimentation to find out just how many layers I can do with the mural still supporting its own weight. I may have the very back in plywood to hold it all together. This would make it a lot easier to hang as well. I also plan to put LED lighting around the frame of the final project. I want it to self-light, and if it works, I'll have the "light" that's in the mural light up as well. I really think that would be a nice touch.

The final printing and shipping will happen in late January or early February. I suppose it could be sooner, but I'm trying to be realistic about the time-suck that is the Holidays. So February for sure, but we'll see how it goes.

A Gifty-Curse

So these ideas just come to me.  I've always loved the "Dogs Playing Poker" mural.  What I don't like is that I really don't see the kinds of variations and variety that you'd expect from such a customizable concept.  I mean seriously, why does everyone almost always use the same dogs?  Is there some kind of weird doggy-conspiracy going on?

"Exclude bulldogs from the table and I will rip your face off. Seriously."
"Exclude bulldogs from the table and I will rip your face off. Seriously."

I also love 3D layering.  Here's an example of what I'm talking about in it's most basic form. This is just cardboard, but I love the effect it makes......

The Big Picture

I've always wanted to do a big project in this form.  Obviously cardboard isn't the answer, and I just don't quite have the time to do it in wood (though those are some of the most beautiful examples I've seen)

The obvious medium in my opinion is acrylic.  It comes in an incredible selection of colors and is fairly easy to work with.  It's even better when there's a laser involved.  I've been looking into this for a long time as well, and so the three ideas came together!.............

These things just come to me!
These things just come to me!

Kickstarter just seemed like the perfect launchpad for this idea.  The funding gained through kickstarter will pay for the acrylic needed, a few small trimming and sanding tools, and the laser cutting machine. Thank you in advance to all who contribute. Sincerely.

Examples Please.......

A friend of mine proofed this for me and he said he had a little trouble visualizing how I was going to do the layering on the dogs.  The greatest problem with providing a nice example is that until I get the laser, working with acrylic is sketchy.  So I thought about it and I got some colored foam sheets.  I've made a mock-up example of a doberman so that you have some idea of what you can expect.  Behold.

"My arrogant posture illustrates both my breed, as well as the fact that I know the artist has already chosen me to make the cut as an included breed for this project. Deal with it."
"My arrogant posture illustrates both my breed, as well as the fact that I know the artist has already chosen me to make the cut as an included breed for this project. Deal with it."

The acrylic will be thicker and the edges will be perfect, so there will be a little more contrast.  From top to bottom this is five layers.  You'll see a few more layers in the final project and the thousand dollar level backing.  The smaller sized murals will be at about this number of layers.  I hope this helps show how I'm going to go about the layering for the dogs and the table and whatnot.

Decisions, Decisions,

The last issue to deal with was what dogs to use. I've always felt like the current versions have been mostly unimaginative. (sure, there's some variance on that web, but I've never actually come across anything interesting in the retail side of things.) I was going through lists of breeds and dogs. I was concerned what would happen if I didn't go with "popular" breeds, and how the community would react to my choices.  And that's when I struck gold:  The Kickstarter community (more specifically, my backers) can choose!

And this is where is really gets interesting.......

For every dollar that is spent backing this project, there will be a vote for a breed of dog associated with it, Backer chosen.  At first I was going to make people chose from a list, but even that would alienate some dog lovers.  A Schipperke doesn't come to mind as the most popular breed of dog available, but if a Schipperke fanatic wants to back this project and put lots of dollars behind that breed, then a Schipperke will find its place at my poker table!

"I guess the question you have to ask yourself is,.... Am I bluffing?"
"I guess the question you have to ask yourself is,.... Am I bluffing?"

When you become a backer, please send me an email to let me know what breed of dog you'd like to choose.  My intent is to keep everyone posted as the votes (hopefully) roll in.

If you'd like to split your votes for different breeds, just let me know. If you want two spots at the table occupied by the same breed of dog, just let me know and we can divide up your votes as you see fit. At the moment, I plan on having five seats at the table. I also will tell you that as the artist, I have opted for a doberman to have one spot at the table.

There's some really great rewards that go along with this one so check it out!  Feel free to make any comments or ask any questions. I like this project because even one dollars gets a vote and lets you truly participate in project!

Let the Madness Begin!

Risks and challenges Learn about accountability on Kickstarter

Material procurement will be the biggest hurdle I face. Getting the laser and the acrylic in will be a matter of ordering and delivery and whatnot. That will also be the most frustrating as once ordered, I just have to wait!

The laser arrival and setup will take a bit of time, possibly software installation. I've used one before and seen them demonstrated many times, so aside from a little troubleshooting, I'm not too worried about that. I also have resources from the company I'm ordering it from to friends in the area.

Shipping will take some research to get the best value for materials and services. But I'm not even sure if this or the items above are even really that challenging. They're just details. I have this all thought through, the real challenge is getting the backers! And on that note, thank you to everyone who looked at my project, and tell your friends!

Substance. You actually get that for just one dollar for supporting this project. None of that "we send good vibes your way" crap! (Although I'll still be doing that, for the record.) First, you get to be a backer of a project. For those keeping track, that matters. Second, you get your name engraved on the final project. (Notoriety is priceless my friend.) Third, just one dollar gets you a vote for a dog breed to be featured "on the poker table". Yes, all this for just one dollar. Anyone that funds the project at any level will receive these benefits, though for what it's worth, just four bucks more gets you all of the the above, that many more votes, and a little something shipped to you. Just sayin'.

Yes, merely five dollars gets something shipped to you for supporting this project! You will receive a laser-cut acrylic "coin" to carry as a badge of honor for supporting this project. It will be about 2-3" in diameter, and will show that it's from Kickerstarter for supporting the Laser Dogs design project. Also, five dollars spent is five votes to determine which dogs make the project! Huzzah!

Behold! A desk plaque to show your backing of the Laser Dogs through Kickerstarter and the fact that you are one of my personal heroes! It will likely be about 5x7, will stand by itself, and frankly, will look very official. You still get the coin mentioned above and this level gets you 25 votes! NOW, we're talking! Don't you love Capitalism, I mean Democracy, I mean, err, both?

I had a friend look at this and he said that he'd be interested in more of the coins given at the five dollar level at higher levels. If you of of a like-mind, this level is for you! At this level you'll get ten of the recognition coins! This, of course, will be added to all the levels above this as well. You're welcome.

At this level, you're no longer kidding around. Think about it, just 55 backers at this level would fund the project. You should totally be one of those people! But the real benefit, (aside from everything else mentioned above) is a mini-mural of the actual project. I'm thinking about 10 x 14ish. (inches) It won't be as detailed as the main project, but it will have some 3D layering. I might be able to put names of backers on the edges of this, but that's going to depend on the final funding level. Either way, you will get 100 votes for a breed of dog to be included as one of the five on the final project! Out of just over 5000 votes, that's a pretty good chunk. It doesn't guarantee your selection (becuase let's face it, in life there really aren't many guarantees) (write that down), but it sure gives you a fighting chance. Let's do this thing!

International. If you're international just add 50% to the level you're buying into and I'll make sure it gets to you! (Please double it if you're at the $5 level) And yes, I'll still count this extra money as votes for dogs. Deal with that Americans!

At this level your scale model gets kicked up a notch. Your scaled-down version of the final project will still be somewhere in the realm of 2x3 feet. I should be able to fit the names of all the backers on at this size as well. It will definitely have 3D layering in detail approaching that of the final project. Also, 500 votes is quite a few. Like an uncommon breed of dog? Well buy in at this level and an otherwise obscure breed could make the final cut. (I hear my friend's mom chanting "Schipperke" from several states away!) I don't think she has the moxy to buy in at this level, so you're probably going to be Schipperke-Free on the final project, but who knows, so get your votes in immediately! If one of those little buggers is in the top five, well, I just don't know what I'll do! (Design one, I suppose) (Also, I realize this comment means I'll receive and inordinate amount of votes for a schipperkee. It's no one's fault. I did it to myself.)

    - Dog Whisperer - Full-Size reproduction of original plus all of the rewards above! Ho, ho! Now here's a person who knows what breed of dog they want present on the final project! Not positive how to emphasize backers of this level yet, but right now I'm thinking that anyone of this level is going to have their name much larger on the final project than other backers. I'm thinking "John Hancock Style" for the rest of the world to enjoy. Oh, and by the way, you get a full-size reproduction of the final project! It's going to be 3x5 feet or 4x6 feet. I'm not sure exactly the size yet, but suffice to say, it will be the attention-grabber of any room it's in! So let's back this up so that we're clear...... At this level you get all of the lower-level items, 1000 votes for a breed of dog, and a full-size "Dogs Playing Poker" mural project with community-chosen dog breeds and the names of all the backers around the edges. It will be the 3D layering that's mentioned in the project description, and frankly, it's going to be incredible! So get ready to live!

ALPHA DOG - There can be only one. I was trying to figure out what to do at this level, and then it hit me. If you have the stones to fund the entire project single-handedly, well my friend, you will receive THE ORIGINAL print. Yep, the original. It won't be in my living room, it will be in yours. It's truly the least I can do for anyone that funds me at this level. I honestly don't expect anyone to contribute at this level, and that's why if you do, the original is yours. And it will truly be original. It's going to have details the other full-size prints won't have. It's probably going to have some little experiments and extra ideas in it, including the LED lighting. Hell, if you buy at this level, consider yourself an executive-level creative contributer. (Honestly it's pretty likely you'll have enough votes to choose even more than one dog at this level, so you're already kinda there!) Got an idea for another project, or want some special tweeking on this one? Just ask, and I'm pretty sure I can make it happen. So step up if you feel moved to do so. I will be at your service. And like I said earlier, there can be only one! ( I apologize in advance for the less-than-subtle Highlander reference.) (Also Alpha-Dog, I guess that's a movie too.)
