This memoir is about my struggle to reconcile with my crazy Colombian father who went from rags to riches back to rags.
A reading from, The Contract of Love.
The Contract of Love is a memoir that took seven years to write; it's about my struggle to reconcile the working class values of an Irish-American mother with the quixotic world of my Colombian father, for whom magic realism was not a literary technique, but a way of life. My father’s unique way of dealing with prejudice was that instead of working hard to achieve the American dream, he made money by exploiting the “gringos.” He grew up in one of the poorest barrios in Bogotá, but won a loteria ticket worth enough for a new suit and a ticket to the U.S. where he went from rags to riches and back to rags again.
THE CONTRACT OF LOVE has universal themes in a cross-cultural context; it’s a serious look at class, power and education in the United States, presented with the absurd humor that was such an integral part of my father’s way of dealing with his painful past.
The book is finished, and has received positive comments from major publishers, but I do not have a platform yet, so they are afraid to take a chance. With your help, I hope to publish and distribute this book myself with funds for final copy editing, e-book formatting, print-on-demand, distribution, and marketing. This means hiring a web designer, graphic designer, and getting hard copies to send to crucial reviewers, bookstores, etc. This is a grassroots effort, so even if you can only give a buck, it helps to spread the word, and show that there is interest. Thanks, Jose
