Just what is a "trichster" and why should you care? Well, I'm glad you asked!

THE STORY

A trichster is a term that some people with trichotillomania call themselves. In our case,Trichster is a film that will examine the little-known disorder trichotillomania through the eyes of those who have it. Over the course of the next year, we will follow a small group of trichsters to experience what living with trich is like on a daily basis.

We will travel across the country and attend retreats, conferences, and support groups with our case studies to try and gain an in-depth and personal perspective on the disorder.

WHY TRICHOTILLOMANIA?

Unlike well-known disorders like self-mutilation, eating disorders, and obsessive compulsive disorder, trichotillomania is an impulse control disorder where sufferers compulsively pull out their hair. Although it affects about 15 million Americans, it is generally unheard of, and those who suffer from it are often unaware that the disorder has a name.

A key reason that it's important to spread awareness about trich is due to the increasing bullying that children are facing. Newer technologies have made it increasingly possible for children to communicate with each other both at school and in the home. As a result, those who are bullied are never far from their tormentors and the teen suicide rate continues to climb. While bullying can stem from many sources like race or sexuality, some areas garner more attention than others.

Lady Gaga has been a key figure in the crusade against bullying and has continuously told young homosexuals that they are "Born This Way", even participating in the "It Gets Better" project, a platform for teenaged members of the LGBT community to reach out to. Young people who suffer from trichotillomania don't have such a champion or role model to look to. It is our dream that Trichster will start a movement that will educate children and parents alike and reach out to those who had previously felt in the dark. We want trichsters to know that they are not alone and that there is a community who will support them.

We are on a quest to discover how we can make a difference in the trich community by raising awareness, generating interest, and ultimately, allowing those who are silently suffering to come forward and seek help.

While we ultimately need to raise $20,000 to produce this film, right now we need $10,000 for production. So even if we have reached our goal, please continue to donate! Funds raised through kickstarter will go towards all aspects of production and post-production from equipment rentals to travel and film festival applications.

$25 will pay for an SD card, XLR cable, or microphone windscreen             $100 will pay for a tripod, adapter, or small hard drive                                  $200 will cover the cost of a hard drive, or travel expenses                          $500 will cover costs of camera rental for one week                                  $1,000 will cover the costs for two people to attend the trichotillomania conference or retreat                                                                                  $5,000 will cover the total cost of post-production, including editing, composing, audio design and mixing, and color correction
