On October 20, 2012, Goose Route will present a new performance at Pry House in Keedysville, MD, choreographed by Kitty Clark and performed by members of kittyclarkmoves.  Pry House was used as Union General McClellan’s headquarters during the Battle of Antietam, served as a field hospital following the battle, and was the place where innovations to battlefield medical care were made that are still in place today.  It was also the home of Elizabeth and Philip Pry, whose lives were turned upside down when Union commanders chose their farm for their headquarters.

Modern dance at a Civil War site?  Absolutely!  Modern dance delves into expression, emotion, impression, and association.  It steps away from literal interpretation.  In this way, dance at an historic site gives people a new and fresh way to experience its significance.  Trust me, you will not be seeing re-enactors in Civil War campsites or watching dancers attempt 19th century waltzes.  The process of modern dance creation is rich, mysterious, and gratifying.

One of the beauties of doing site-specific dance is that there are some things you get for free: light, a venue, sets.  

But there are some things you still have to pay for: dancers, music, costumes, choreographer, video documentation, creation of a DVD of the finished piece, and rehearsal space rent for some of the preliminary indoor rehearsals.
