We want to share the history and impact of the Houston Bayou through film to change the way people view development and infrastructure.
In the early 1900’s Buffalo Bayou would often flood, damaging property and displacing residents in the area. After horrific floods in the early 1930’s, and at the request of local citizens, the US Army Corps of Engineers created the Addicks and Barker reservoirs upstream, channelized the bayou from the reservoirs down to Beltway 8, and then excavated the bayou between Shepherd Drive and Downtown. The Bayou Preservation Association was founded in 1960 to protect the natural Bayou and was successful in preventing the channelization of the bayou between Beltway 8 and Shepherd. In 1986 the Buffalo Bayou Partnership was created to revitalize and transform the bayou from Shepherd down to the Port of Houston. They have made great strides in the last two decades in bringing the Bayou edges alive with greenways, parks, trails and other amenities. However, the work has just begun and there is still much to be done. The Buffalo Bayou Partnership has made it their mission to bring this whole bayou corridor to life, balancing ecological restoration with recreational improvements and by advocating for strong and healthy neighborhood development along its banks. As a result of their efforts, once-neglected spaces of little to no value are now thriving greenways and parks where people gather to celebrate holidays and exercise - even enjoy the fresh air. Real estate surrounding the region has surged while crime rates have fallen, improving the quality of life for Houston residents. One great example is Buffalo Bayou Promenade which opened in 2006.
To celebrate the success we want to document the region and interview the major players involved in the restoration of the Bayou (Houston's Mayor, Bayou Designers, Local Activists and Residents, Environmental Experts, Professors, and many more...) We want to support this initiative and spread awareness of the benefits of similar projects (social, economic, environmental).
The Buffalo Bayou Partnership will be constantly raising funds to complete their vision, and we feel this film will help inspire others to contribute or just to think about their communities from a positive and healthy perspective. Developing regions with consideration of its residents and the local ecology is possible, and the Bayou is a great example of how economics can work hand in hand with environment.
We are producing a documentary that addresses issues of redevelopment, infrastructure and urban ecologies by showcasing the landmark lower Buffalo Bayou corridor in Houston. Through this film, these projects will serve as the catalysts for change in an effort to rehabilitate similar struggling ecosystems throughout the country. In Southern California alone, many restoration opportunities come to mind from the San Juan Creek, Newport Back Bay, to the Los Angeles River. These areas have been installed and neglected, left to degrade over time. In their current states, they have become health hazards and eyesores, in need of desperate repair. The Bayou is a great case study to understand just how important an element of open space is to the success and growth of a City.
Our barebones goal is $20,000. Those of you familiar with film production know that this is a very tight budget for a documentary. Thankfully we have the support of some amazing and experienced crew members. These funds will cover film equipment rentals, permits, sound equipment, and post-work (editing, score, 3D animations, Color Correction). We are very passionate about this project and for the possibility to influence positive change in the way we look at development. For this reason, the crew are willing to invest their time and energy into this project if we can raise the $20,000. Please check out our other previous projects for example of our work:
