About this project
Gregory Miller is an American-born photographer; Artem Nazarov is a Russian-born photographer. Together, we will travel to Chernobyl and to the nearby abandoned town of Pripyat to photograph the current conditions in the exclusion zone. The town and power plant have been abandoned since the disaster of April 1986 and present a rare demonstration of how the natural environment reclaims an urban area. Following photography in the exclusion zone, we will travel to western Russia to photograph and interview some of the surviving emergency workers, known as the liquidators. Most are suffering from disease directly related to their work as liquidators at Chernobyl. Although formally recognized by the government for their sacrifice, their compensation and medical support are becoming severely diminished. We want to tell their story. Our project begins November 30, 2011.Our budget covers travel expenses, a modest per diem, permits and visas, film and processing for our nine days out.
Greg and Artem both enjoy pursuing self-assigned projects, such as this one. Greg's website will show you some of his personal projects that have received recognition from both Communication Arts and Graphis. Artem's website will show you some of his personal projects, such as his photography on Russian prisoners that was recognized by Graphis.
