About this project

Farm Lot 59 is the direct connection between farmer and consumer. Local farming makes it possible to distribute fresh and pesticide‐free produce to local consumers. The consumer who buys direct from the farm enjoys fresh, ethically and responsibly farmed products that are considered more nutritious because of their freshness. Consumers also share a sense of ownership in the farm that is growing their food since they will have the opportunity to see where their food comes from and know exactly who grew it. We are trying to create an urban/ rural connection within the local community and Farm Lot 59 will accomplish this in Long Beach, California.

The name “Farm Lot 59” makes a direct reference to Long Beach’s early agricultural past. In 1881 the land was plotted to become 20‐acre farm lots. The farm lots were numbered 1 through 185. Because of its topography and role in the City’s municipal water infrastructure, Farm Lot 59 was never developed into a farm or homes and remains owned by the City of Long Beach to this day. Farm Lot 59 has the potential to become the start of a new chapter in Long Beach's agricultural history, as a 21st Century Urban Farm.

With my vision, your financial help and lots of hard work I plan to develop my 1 acre into a biodynamic, organic mini farm. We not only want to grow and eat good food but train young farmers. This will be an urban farm that creates local green jobs , training and educational opportunities that provides local, healthy fresh food on a historically significant site, is just the creative, innovative project that Long Beach needs. Farm Lot 59 will make a difference and by combining resources with the city, local partners and friends, the vision of eating well and living healthy lives will be possible in Long Beach. Farm Lot 59 is the future of sustainable communities and for food security for us and our children.

We are an official 501(c)3 nonprofit, if you would like a tax exemption with your donation please let us know and we will happily be your write off.

Connected as Sasha Kanno (608 friends)

Sasha Kanno is a floral designer by trade but has also been a backyard farmer since childhood. She is the Director of Wrigley Garden; a community garden started in the spring of 2009 with its 40 plots, 14 hens and a small orchard she has fed many hungry mouths. She is also one of the founders of the Wrigley co‐op food exchange which harvests, shares and preserves the excess produce from our city.
Farm Lot 59, a biointensive mini farm is a new venture but she is dedicated to its success: “I am already growing amazing food and this farm will help me take it to the next level. This is the direct connection to the food that nourishes us all throughout our lives. Long Beach use to be full of agriculture, let's get back to our roots. Our children should be able to have wonderfully fresh food while growing up in the city.”
