On the surface - Chula's reality show: "Yakety-Yak & a Bottle of Jack" Underneath - "All we have is each other."
First off, thank you in advance for reading this! After years of doing dramatic, emotional roles, I began creating comedic characters for my own amusement. One of them took on a life of its own; a character based on my mother, Chula (a mix of domineering intensity and doe-like vulnerability). In "The Love Junkies of Hell's Kitchen" I play Chula and explore issues that match my current views of what really matters. In recent years, I've realized that certain things I thought were important ... aren't. Not really. They were merely things I was hiding behind so I wouldn't have to feel my own vulnerability as a human being. THAT'S what's at the heart of my story. I've created two vulnerable characters and put them in lives where all they have is each other. I've also given them painful pasts and secrets that hold them back. Not that I've ever had any secrets hold me back, no siree, not me ... shhhh ....
FUNDING HELPS COVER:
"The Love Junkies of Hell's Kitchen" will be part of Theater for the New City's 2012 "Dream Up" Festival in NYC and will get 5 performances (dates & site below). I'm keeping costs low by doing everything myself ... almost (I have been blessed with A LOT of help). I wrote the piece, am directing it, producing it, acting in it, I cast it (with help from my AWESOME co-producers). I'm also doing the lighting (with my stage manager), set design, props, costumes, promotion, etc. Yes, men in little white coats may come take me away soon, but in the meantime I need to pay Theater for the New City for use of their space, my actor (the wonderful Gary Hilborn: www.garyhilborn.com), my stage manager (the fantastic Cristina Ramos), T. Schreiber Studios for their great rehearsal space (60 hours of rehearsal adds up, even at the best of rates). Additional budget items: audition space rental, music use, props, costumes, advertising, programs, set-pieces, delivery of set pieces, & misc. Thank you!!!
