A cabinet that reveals truths behind the American food system, as my graphic design senior thesis at Parsons School of Design.
When you make a choice to eat something, do you stop and think what you're really about to put into your body? Who grew it, where it came from, the synthetic ingredients it contains, how it affects a family's income on another continent?
For my year-long senior thesis in Communication Design at Parsons School of Design, I'm creating a cabinet that will inform viewers of how our food system works now, and of alternative actions one can take to eat a little more morally and healthily. Imagine a real life version of the rendering above! (It's a lot cooler.)
From afar, the cabinet resembles an old apothecary case or triptych—only when you get closer you see that all the vials, cages, and other ephemera represent the pesticides, effort, and money that goes into our food (it can be pretty shocking info).
Just to give you an idea, the following materials are being used, and they're more costly than I anticipated:
15 wood panels (facade)
6 sheets of plexiglass (inner cabinet doors, walls, and shelves)
500 glass-and-cork vials (represents pesticides)
Silkscreen materials (informative text silkscreened onto cabinet walls)
I've worked on this project for a year now, and from research to production, it means a lot to me to inform my audience about food sourcing through a three-dimensional method. I thank you in advance for any interest in making this project HAPPEN!
