This is the life story of musician and renaissance man Steve White as he travels the world in art and music.
This is the story of Steve White, one of the most original singer-songwriters that you never knew. This is a film about his life told through his music, rare footage of live performances, and interviews with fellow musicians, family and friends that loved him.
I met Steve at a house concert three years ago. When I heard him sing and play for the first time, I was hooked on his sound from the very first note. He was using a footboard to play a drum beat with his feet while playing slide guitar like it was a percussion instrument. He was tapping the sound board of the guitar and creating an incredible syncopation of strings and beats with his feet and hands, while simultaneously singing and playing harmonica. It was nothing short of amazing. I've experienced a lot of great music in my life, but none like Steve's.
When he started to tell the story about Faial, describing this mysteriously beautiful island in the Azores where his beloved Alda was from, I was instantly transported there. Then he sang the song, "Faial", and I was blown away. Somehow I knew I wanted to do a film about his life and music. At this time I found out we were neighbors. I mean he lived about 100 yards away from me and I knew this was meant to be.
Until he was about 17 years old, Steve's father and the family were stationed in Southeast Asia. When he returned to the states he went to art school in Philadelphia and Nova Scotia, but he continued to create music.
Steve was a humble man who always gave back to his community. Whether it was playing in senior living facilities, cancer wards, children's centers or Alzheimer's clinics, he always volunteered to help friends and others. Even when he became famous in Europe, he never forgot his roots and continued to give back throughout his life. His journey is an incredible one, and the story of a true American original.
Though he left us way too soon due to cancer, he left a legacy of music and paintings to be shared. This documentary film is the story he trusted me to tell, so his music and art can be experienced and shared universally. He was my friend for way too short a time.
