We are recording a concept album of the Dusty Springfield musical we have written to submit to agents and producers.
The details of struggles and accomplishments of Dusty Springfield in an industry ingrained with sexism, racism, homophobia, and xenophobia makes for an amazing story. Our goal was to tell her story by choosing songs that advanced plot and character honestly but not salaciously; avoiding melodrama and camp. The concept: At Dusty's Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Induction, guests journey back to their past as Ready Steady Go! Mods to re-enact Dusty's life, accompanied by the onstage band of Elton John, Neil Tennant, Nona Hendryx, Madeline Bell, and Martha Reeves. It's a celebration of a culture and ideas that bore Dusty Springfield, and the true artist, self, and pain she harnessed artistically and eventually married within herself. Women play a multitude or all roles, and the show's Mod concept allows casting which need not reflect chronology. Dusty’s actual quotes are used as dialogue whenever possible. We have humbly altered a few lyrics for dramatization, integration, and character advancement. And the Mod movement of ideas is timelier than ever. This concept album will reflect the interploying and crafting 23 of Dusty's songs into a musical steeped in the aesthetic and sound of the 60's with 16 musicians and 12 singers who share our vision of a woman who was, indeed, a pioneer. Any bit helps. Or as Dusty sang: "Little by Little. Bit by Bit.
