Help the New Haarlem Arts Theatre produce its 2nd season: a Latino-tinged "Sweet Charity" & August Wilson's "Ma Rainey's Black Bottom."
An acclaimed first season. Huge community support. And much more to come with your support.
“There’s theater here in Harlem, but there needs to be more."—Eugene Nesmith, Artistic Director of NHAT
-
This will be the 2nd season of the New Haarlem Arts Theatre.
The first presented highly praised productions of James Baldwin's Blues
for Mister Charlie and the musical revue It Ain't Nothin' But the
Blues. This summer our projects include a Latino-tinged take on the musical Sweet
Charity and a revival of the modern classic, August Wilson's Ma Rainey's Black Bottom.
Our objective is to establish a world-class academic/professional theatre partnership in Harlem, supplying first-rate entertainment where currently there is a lack. We aim to build and sustain a vibrant cultural institution in partnership with the City College of New York, that will offer a home for the best emerging modern theater imaginable. .
This new arts institution was welcomed by all of the major media including a lengthy article on the front page of The New York Times Arts Section last May.
In our new theatre, student actors will be afforded the opportunity to work alongside the most daring, inventive, and creative artists in their field on a professional level. The New Haarlem Arts Theatre will serve as a community anchor with the capacity to unite our students and local residents in a range of programming that will address the professional and educational aspirations of the unique and culturally essential neighborhood that is Harlem.
The productions of the New Haarlem Arts Theatre (NHAT) will encourage artistic freedom, risk taking and bold experimentation with theatrical forms. Our objective is to make theatre an integral part of the Harlem community and accessible to all classes of people. NHAT also aspires to attract audiences from around the city to Harlem again.
