Posted project update #14Hurricane vs CD
Post CommentFirst, the bad news: our CD release concert is cancelled.
Hurricane Irene is set to pass over Lexington, MA throughout Sunday. Our CD release concert is cancelled and we will try to reschedule in September. If you live in the area be safe tomorrow.
And now the good news: we have 500 copies of our CD in hand!
We will mail out signed CDs Monday (to avoid the hurricane) and make MP3 downloads available as soon as possible. Starting next week CDs will go on sale through www.zachherchen.com. In the meantime you can check out our CD cover (attached).
We are incredibly excited to have the CD done, love the all the commissioned pieces, and can't wait to share it with you!

Posted project update #13CD Release - Aug 28!
Post CommentWe've been working hard these last 2 months rehearsing, meeting with composers, getting licenses, recording, editing, designing the CD layout, and even moving to new apartments! Now, with only 16 days left, the CD release is almost upon us!
Join us for the official CD release Sunday, August 28th 2pm at Follen Church (755 Massachusetts Avenue, Lexington, MA). Tickets are $10. We will be giving the world premieres of music by American composers Kathleen Bader, Adam Knauss and George Lam that you helped commission! There will be a reception in the Community Center afterward and (of course) CDs available for purchase.
If you can't make it to Lexington, don't fret. We are booking concerts for our CD tour right now and will announce dates when they are ready. Check our website for the latest info: http://emergingvoicesproject.blogspot.com/.
But wait, don't you get awesome awards? That's right! Downloads will be sent via emailed link and CDs will be mailed straight to you. Custom songs are wrapping up and will be emailed as soon as possible (they are completely awesome). DVDs will be finished after the CD release. For other individual awards, you will be contacted by email.
We can't wait to share with you the results of our work!

Posted project update #12Rehearsing, Recording, and Music Written!
Post CommentGreetings EVP supporters,
It's time to break radio silence! We have been hard at work the last two months and now it is high time for an update:
Coaching With Lori Laitman - We traveled to Potomac, MD in April to work with composer Lori Laitman on her piece I Never Saw Another Butterfly. Elisabeth and I first performed her piece 7 years ago and it was awesome to finally meet her in person!
Recording Has Started - Through March we made test recordings and started to official recording! Up next is rehearsing and recording Adam Knauss' new work during May.
Music In Hand - Our original three commissioned composers have finished writing and we now have all the music for our CD in hand! The new pieces are Adam Knauss' Portrait, Kathleen Bader's Two Songs for the Sounds Outside, and George Lam/Benjamin Rogers' The Person In The Room Wishes To Be Left Alone. Detailed info will be shared on our blog as we record each piece.
Guggenheim Fellowship for Amy Beth Kirsten - Congratulations to our fourth composer Amy Beth Kirsten who was named a 2011 Guggenheim Fellow in April. Amy joined our project through your generous support and is writing us a piece to be completed in the Fall.
Tour Plans - We are narrowing down CD tour dates! As soon as things are official we will announce the dates/locations.
Custom Songs - For those of you awarded custom songs, we are working on them! You will be sent your song as soon as it's ready.
Finally, thanks for your support. Attached are pictures from recent activities. We don't want to spam you with updates, so if you would like more regular news check out our blog: http://emergingvoicesproject.blogspot.com/

Posted project update #9Who's the new composer?
Post CommentGreetings from Elisabeth -
We're thrilled to announce that, having surpassed the $3500 goal, we've asked the amazing Amy Beth Kirsten to write a piece for us - and she's agreed!
Amy was a graduate student at the Peabody Conservatory when Zach and I were wee sophomores, and I've been a huge fan of her work ever since.
Below is a photo and brief bio. Check her out!
Amy Beth Kirsten (b. 8/21/1972 in Belleville, Illinois) was recently a finalist for the Rome Prize in Music Composition and was the recipient of a 2009 Artist Fellowship from the Rockefeller Foundation. She has been a Composition Fellow at Norfolk New Music Festival, Bang on a Can, Mizzou New Music Festival, Music10, and at École Normale de Musique in Paris. Most recently, Ms. Kirsten held the position of Missouri Composer Laureate (2009-10). Recent performances include those by Vicki Ray, Alarm Will Sound, Tim Munro (of eighth blackbird), American Composers Orchestra – 16th Annual Underwood Reading, l’Orchestre de la francophonie canadienne, Harbor Opera Company, San Francisco Cabaret Opera, Missouri Verses and Voices, the CAGE Ensemble, Volti, and the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra in a reading session with Marin Alsop.
Raised in the suburbs of Kansas City and Chicago, Ms. Kirsten received degrees from Benedictine University (BA), the Chicago College of Performing Arts at Roosevelt University (MM), and from Peabody Conservatory (DMA). She has taught on the faculties of Peabody Conservatory, Towson University, Wesleyan University, and the University of Connecticut. Currently a freelance composer, she currently lives and works in New Haven, CT.

Posted project update #8102% funded
Post CommentWe have passed the $3,000 mark! To celebrate, enjoy the attached video from our Plymouth kick-off concert. It's three short pieces by Jason Belcher. He's a cool composer from Boston whose music is open ended and folksong inspired. My apologies for the camera focus issues, just consider it artsy.
Elisabeth and I have been blown away by everyone's response and generosity. Really. It means so much to us to have your support and we can't wait to create the CD this summer! We're also excited for (and terrified of) those "choose a song" pledges, haha.
Now, having met our goal doesn't mean that our fund drive is over. Elisabeth and I would love to add another composer to the project (we are still considering who). We also want to expand our plans for a CD release tour (so that all of you can take part!). Here's our new goals:
$3,500 - we'll add another composer (TBA)
$4,000 - we'll expand our planned CD release tour (NYC and Boston) to include additional cities (Philly, Baltimore, DC, or request a place!)We've got 16 days left so help spread the word, and thanks for the support!
