Posted project update #3Compost Bike Tour
Post CommentDear backers,
As the season comes to a close, we would like to invite you to join us for a behind the scenes tour of WQCI sites. On Saturday, October 23rd, we will be visiting five compost sites we manage. We've been processing about 1,000 lbs of compost a week, and have created around 4 tons of compost so far this season, so we're pretty excited to share the morning with you and answer any question you have.
The ride will start at 9am at Long Island City Community Garden, located on 49th Ave between Vernon Blvd and 5th St. the weather is supposed to be sunny and cool - perfect for a bike ride. If you don't have a bike, but would like to join us, please drop us a line - we'll figure something out.
More info about the ride:
-It is less than 5 miles long with 5 stops.
-It features restrooms at 4 of the 5 stops.
-It includes a stop at a farmers market to enjoy refreshments; the last stop will be at a community garden pot luck (consider bringing a dish that can travel).
-It will pass two bike shops, in case your ride needs a mechanics attention. It would be great if you can let us know you're coming, and if you'd like to bring guests. Feel free to show up on the day even if you haven't RSVP's. To register for the ride please visit http://bit.ly/WQCI-BikeTour
See you Saturday,

Great work guys. My project, the Western Queens Compost Initiative, got its seed money through Kickstarter to do just this. We collect at 4 CSA's and 2 Greenmarkets. Our absorption sites include three community gardens, two private gardens, and an urban farm. The compost that's processed is used here in the city to improve the soil in public green spaces, and to grow more food in urban gardens & on urban farms. Looking forward to your campaign being funded successfully.

Posted project update #2First Collection of the Season
Post CommentHello current and prospective future backers!
We are $120 short of a $500 matching grant target. Building our campaign from $630 to $750 will automatically boost it to $1250! We also find out this week if a similar grant from Citizens Committee will kick in, which would bring our total pledged+donated to $2,250, just a stones throw from our overall goal.
If you or someone you know has considered a pledge for the work trike from Worksman Cycles (right here in Queens), the time to pledge is NOW! We are less than a month away from our deadline, so please, DON'T WAIT.
Last weekend, we had our first anniversary of the initial community-scale collection we piloted last year, the 5boro bike tour fruit peel collection at the Astoria Park rest stop. Last year we collected about about 1/4 of a cu. yd., transportable with a hatchback. This year we collected over 6 times that much, requiring two trips with a flatbed rental from Home Depot. Check out the pictures here.
Next year we aim to transport the waste without fossil fuels, without waiting until all the cyclists clear out, and without waiting until there is so much accumulated that the haul requires a truck.
How, you ask? Pledge to the campaign to become part of the answer.

Posted project update #1Gardening Starter Kits
Post CommentBack the project with $25 or more, and you'll receive a gardening kit to help you (or that aspiring gardener in your life) start growing New York State heirloom vegetables - just add water and sunshine.
The compost mix is a carefully selected blend of soil and finished compost. The soil is free of toxins and chemicals, and comes from Astoria. The compost is from NYC community gardens. Growing in a mix of soil and compost allows the plant just the right amount water, and provides a slow, sustained release of nutrients.
The seeds have been generously donated by Hudson Valley Seed Library, who create gift-quality seed packs featuring works designed by New York artists in order to celebrate the beauty of heirloom gardening. Hudson Valley Seed Library's goal is to develop a network of organic and certified naturally grown seed growers in the Hudson Valley region of New York State and surrounding areas.
Thanks for supporting the Western Queens Compost Initiative!
(Please note: this reward is available for residents of western Queens and surrounding areas, to help us minimize our ecological footprint. We apologize for any inconvenience.)
