Just in time for Spirit Day...

    Wow!

Just in time for GLAAD's Spirit Day, Robin E. Kaplan sent over an email with the final version of her The Color Purple-inspired print!

So we knew that was coming any day, but she also included an adorable little surprise: an early version of ANOTHER print, this one inspired by the oft-challenged children's book, And Tango Makes Three! The children's book about two male penguins at the Central Park Zoo has been THE most frequently challenged book four of the last five years for its supposed "anti-ethnic, anti-family, and homosexual" content because (gasp!) it dares to imply that a  same-sex pair of critters could be in love and raise a baby.

Remember, if you pledge at least $25, you can select one of these prints for your very own!

    Meet Robin E. Kaplan!

In our last update, we shared a sneak peek at another one of the prints you can select if you back this project at the $25+ level. In this update, we're happy to tell you a little bit about the artist behind the print inspired by The Color Purple...

    • Who are you?
      Robin E. Kaplin

    • Where can people find you online?
      http://www.robin-e-kaplan.com/
      http://www.etsy.com/shop/thegorgonist

    • So... who's Robin E. Kaplan, anyway?
"Robin E Kaplan is an illustrator whose first book, Spartacus and the Circus of Shadows, by Molly E Johnson, comes out October 2011 from Raintown Press. She also works with Hollywood talent on Mrs P's Storytime, a web-based TV show where lovable Mrs P (Kathy Kinney) reads fairy tales and other literature aloud to kids, and has therefore illustrated dozens of classics. She likes ghosts and monsters, woodland themes and outer space, and thinks that young people deserve a challenge in their reading. "

    • And what are you creating for The Uprise Books Project?
"“No Forbidden Love, No Forbidden Books” will be a poster series featuring books who have been banned or challenged for their frank gay themes. Graphic book cover-styled pieces with contemporary sensitivities and retro flavor. I'm focusing on The Color Purple and Tango Makes Three."

    • How'd you get suckered into this? And what's your favorite banned book?
"Alice Walker's The Color Purple was a life-changing book for me when I read it as a Freshmen in high school. When I tried to talk about literature with other kids, especially other kids going through what I was at the time, I realized how lucky I was to have even had access to a book like that, let alone classroom discussions! Censorship is like lying on a societal level, and omission is a particularly insidious kind of censorship."

    • Who inspires you, artistically?
"Actually my greatest illustration inspiration is Tove Jansson, the preeminent Finnish children's book illustrator whose Moomin books are still influencing artists and authors around the world. Think Winnie The Pooh but with bohemian bite! Look up her life for one crazy and controversial ride."

    Preview of Robin Kaplan's Print!

    Good morning!

Last night, we opened up our email and found a very pleasant surprise waiting for us: an early sketch of Robin Kaplan's print! Robin's piece is inspired by the Alice Walker classic, The Color Purple, and we can tell already that it's going to be a thing of beauty. Remember, folks who pledge at least $25 will have their choice of either this, Dane Ault's Huckleberry Finn piece, or one of the two yet-to-be-revealed works.
