Posted project update #11The inaugural run video is online
It's hard to believe that we're wrapping up our Orphan Annie project. Thanks to all our backers, we've had an amazing journey restoring our Monotype OA sorts caster. She's now casting type on a regular basis! We've posted the video of the inaugural run and hope you enjoy it.

Backers, we're just wrapping up the last of the rewards, so look for another update on ship dates in the next week or so. Thanks again for all your support!

Posted project update #9Orphan Annie is HOT!
Post CommentShe’s hot! And she pumps!
As anyone who’s worked on old machines knows, restoration is rarely a matter of a little cleaning and throwing the switch. On August 6 we tested a pump on the Orphan Annie, but found that it was too worn to provide the pressure needed to cast type. On to Plan B – find and test another pump.
And happily, last week we passed a couple of huge milestones on the road to casting type with Orphan Annie. After some hot work changing out parts, we got a pump working and were able to cast a quad and a letter 'c' from an expendable mat of Franklin Gothic Bold!
We’re working our way toward the casting of Stern slowly – there are still a bunch of adjustments to the machine to be made before we are willing to put our precious Stern mats on the caster, but we’re making progress.
Our new estimate for the inaugual run is late September or early October. As usual, a big THANK YOU! to all our backers. We're so glad you're on this adventure with us.
(Thanks to Chris Chen for the photos.)

Posted project update #8Inaugural run date is tentatively set
Post CommentHello backers. We bring you good news on the Orphan Annie restoration. We've been busy tearing Orphan Annie apart, cleaning her, and getting all her parts back in place and properly adjusted. (Photo below is of Rebecca and Joe adjusting the bridge.)
The cooling unit is partially built. Wiring is in place. The Stern mats have been modified to fit the caster. (Aren't they beautiful?) With all this great actiivity, we're hoping to do the inaugural run of Orphan Annie and begin to cast some Stern on August 6.
Several of you have asked about when rewards will be shipped. This is dependent on getting the Stern letters cast, so we hope late August or September will see rewards going out the door.
As we get closer to our target date, we'll keep you posted on our progress. Thanks for your ongoing support and encouragement.

Posted project update #7Backer 'plaque' will be limited edition print
Post CommentGreetings backers and followers from a tired, but happy, Type Foundry board. We held our public open house on Saturday, and had a wonderful turnout with well over 200 people coming by for tours and conversation. With people attending from as far as Seattle and Eugene, families bringing their kids and retirees from the printing trade coming by to chat, we couldn't have hoped for a more fun day--or better validation that this working museum has relevance in our community. We only wish each of you could have been there to see the eagerness and excitement to see these machines running again, to understand how they work and how type metal can be used today.
With the open house behind us, we're returning our attention to the remaining hours of this Kickstarter project and, of course, the rewards. Joe Green, an award winning poet and printer, will be printing the letterpress 'plaque' listing all backers pledging over $125. Generously, Joe has decided to turn the plaque into a limited edition print. So, in addition to displaying the plaque at the Type Foundry museum, we'll also be sending a print to each backer who pledges over $125! We want you generous backers to be able to look at your name on the print and remember your vital and much appreciated role in making our Orphan Annie sing.
Thanks again to all for your support!

Posted project update #6100+ backers... time for a peek at rewards
Post CommentThanks to all 100+ backers so far! We have just 7 days to go, so please tell your friends they still have time to get in on the fun. To entice them and you, here's a peek at the progress on the composition stick holder. And to further entice you Pacific Northwesterners, please come meet Orphan Annie at our open house on Saturday. Willamette Week wrote a nice article about us and the opening, so we hope to have a big crowd.

Posted project update #5Restoration and Open House Preparations
Post CommentThanks to all the folks who've been volunteering at the Foundry since we started our Kickstarter project! We now have a vent hood on the Orphan Annie (as well as the Material Maker and Composition Caster). We also thought you might like to see what happens at a typical work party... namely cleaning, cataloging and restoring.

Posted project update #4Type Foundry Open House
Post CommentHi Backers and followers!
The Foundry will be holding an open house on Saturday, March 26 from 3:00-7:00pm at our museum space in the Greenstreet Details building at 8900 NE Vancouver Way, Portland, Oregon.
We'll be giving tours of the space, showing off the casting equipment and collection of matrices, showing some of Chris Stern's work, and holding a silent auction of donated works including printed ephemera and other handcrafted items.
If you're in town that weekend, come see our progress in restoring Orphan Annie. We'd love to see you... and please bring your friends!

I'm proud to have played a part in this. I hope I can stop by and see it the next time I'm in Portland.
