Posted project update #624 Hours Left.
Post CommentFirst of all, thank you to everyone who has given to this project! We have surpassed our initial goal and we are continuing to get new backers. With exactly 24 hours to go, 326 people have given $21,314 to help us move to the new space. We have been excited and honored by the number of people who have personally committed to make sure the project was successful. Each time you walk in the building, you will know that you were a part of bringing it about. However, the $20,000 goal is a floor, not a ceiling and every additional dollar makes this move more possible.
In this last day, we'd love to see one more push for all those people waiting for the last minute. Help us get the word out one last time!

Posted project update #2Concert Memories
Post CommentThank you to everyone who has supported the Luminary in some way over the past 4.5 years. It has been quite a ride already. As I’ve been thinking today about how much it will take to reach our $20,000 goal in a matter of 10 days I’ve also been thinking about how quickly The Luminary has grown and that it has grown into something much better than I ever expected. 10 days is long enough to change everything. In the last 4.5 years, I’ve seen some beautiful, surprising things that have really changed me - I’m feeling sentimental. I’m also feeling incredibly hopeful about the future. Here are some of my favorite music related memories that I wanted to share.
Brea, Co-Director of The Luminary
Anathallo – March 2008
All I think about when I remember Anathallo is “slugs and bugs and slugs and bugs and slugs and bugs!” Wow. It was a really incredible performance. The first concert we ever hosted at The Luminary. This was before I knew how to design a concert poster. They were so dead on. All of their strange sounds and dramatic harmonies so calculated. The listener veered back and forth on thinking about how complicated the songs would be to perform and then completely forgetting the complexity and getting absolutely lost in the songs. I felt like everyone in the room was incredibly close to one another. That we all shared this sweet, happy, innocent experience. This is why I do what I do.
The Books – October 2009
http://theluminaryarts.com/press/pitchfork-video-from-the-books-concert-9-20-09/
I remember when we got the confirmation that they were coming in. I try my best not to be a “super fan-weirdo”, but every now and again I get pretty close. The night of the show, people were sitting cross-legged on the floor quietly waiting for them to step on stage. Rather than stepping on, they sat on the edge of the stage with nearly the same posture as the rest of us. I love how odd and inventive their music alone is, but when you see the comical, creepy, simple and out-dated looking video along with the songs, it brings a totally different dimension. You are lost in a strange head space that is familiar and unreal. Something few people know is that after their show, the band came upstairs and saw a semi-usable pump organ that James and I had in the studio area and asked if they could sample it. We obviously said “yes!” I’m not sure if that sample ever made it on a recording, but I’m going to pretend that it did.
Califone – March 2010
I wasn’t sure what to expect when we booked these guys. I knew they were going to be scoring a film live called “All my friends are funeral singers”, but live scoring doesn’t happen often and I knew nothing about the film until they got here to set up. I made a stamp that said “funeral singers” to smear on the wrist of everyone who came out that night. We had a full house, which always feels great. The film was about a fortune-teller who shared her home with ghosts. It was mesmerizing., enchanting and unexpected. May I boast for a moment about St. Louis concert goers? The band received it’s only standing ovation on that tour right here. They played their first encore in over a year in return. Well done, St. Louisans.
Of Montreal – July 4th, 2011
No one believed us when we made this announcement. Grant it, the last time Of Montreal played in St. Louis it was at the Pageant. When we got the confirmation I may or may not have squealed and jumped up and down. They came and put on a full-blown performance that would have easily please a packed 2,000 person venue, though our room only held 300. This is something you will never see again. A unique, up-close experience with a band who decided to give a gift to their fans.
Help us spread the word so we can keep bringing shows like this to St. Louis!

Posted project update #1The Luminary Project Update #1
Post CommentFirst of all, thank you for your support so far. We are in the last few weeks of this project and it is exciting to see it develop. We have reached a few milestones that we wanted to pass along to all of our backers. So far, we've raised over $4,000 and seen the support of over 225 people who have 'liked' the project on Facebook. We have also received a number of significant donations, grants and pledges not included in this number that are helping make the impending move possible. Finally, we are excited to announce that SPACE Architecture + Design, an incredible St. Louis-based architecture firm, has committed to lead the new building project as a way for them to support the future of the creative community in the city.
We have just a few weeks left to reach our Kickstarter goal, so continue to share the link with your friends. We are always open to hear your ideas as well, so feel free to email us with your thoughts on how we can expand our reach even further.
Thank you!
