Last Day for Pledges - Update

6 Hours left until pledges for "The Afterlife" closes on Kickstarter! Even though we have already made our initial goal, we appreciate all of the pledges that are coming in now! These funds will be used to ensure the best lighting for the project and help keep our crew happy and well-fed. Also, we'll be using funds to send the film to many festivals once it is complete.

Update from the weekend: We have cast the lead actors! We will be announcing the actors' names in the near future but we are very happy with our choices and couldn't have found a better fit for the roles. We saw some very talented people audition for the roles so they were touch decisions. But these two fine actors stood out in the end.

The director, Brad, will be rehearsing with the actors in the next couple of weeks and preparing them to knock the roles out of the park.

Any last-minute pledges from anyone you know would be much appreciated! We'll keep you posted with more updates.

    Best,

    100% Funded!

WE DID IT! Our funding goal of $2,500 has been reached! And we did it with 6 days left for other pledges to trickle in.

We are thrilled to have participated with you in accomplishing our goal! And what a feeling of humility to know that we could not have done it without the help of you all. It's incredible that the pledges came from people from all over the world and to know that the film already has backers, an audience and continued support is the fuel that will keep the engine running throughout.

Now, we can utilize the funds based on our budget breakdown and appropriate them toward each area of production. We are holding auditions for the principal actors this week and will be making our decisions shortly. Both the old man and the boy in the film will require a wide range of emotional reach as both the characters' and our perceptions of them will undergo transformation during the story.

The rest of the pledges coming in will help cover other areas that we chose not to include in our $2,500 goal, such as fees to submit the completed film to festivals, a contingency fee (a percentage allocated for emergencies during production), as well as the commission fee that Kickstarter keeps. So, if anyone does ask, yes, pledges can still be made! Any funds that are made during these last five days will be put to great use.

In closing, I do want to express our gratitude once again for your generosity. You have made yourself available with your pledges, time, encouragement. I'll end with the way Shel Silverstein does in "The Giving Tree" with a tree who has made itself wholly available:

"I don't need very much now," said the boy. "just a quiet place to sit and rest. I am very tired." "Well," said the tree, straightening herself up as much as she could, "well, an old stump is good for sitting and resting. Come, Boy, sit down. Sit down and rest." And the boy did. And the tree was happy.

    Yours,

Inception As Compared to In-N-Out Burgers

Some of you backers of "The Afterlife" I know and some of you I don't, so I want to once again thank you for your continued support. Due to your generosity, we're 60% funded! You know, one thing that unites the luckiest of us and even those who are vegetarians -- the glory of In-N-Out! I hope every one of our backers has had the chance to experience this carnivorous bliss. After eating some In-N-Out yesterday, I thought of how many out-of-towners make In-N-Out a must-eat-destination. Somehow, a fast food restaurant has evolved into a "given" stop for most, a pilgrimage for others, rivaling even Harold and Kumar's overambitious desire for White Castle. The tourist's passion for the thin patty and toasted bun has become so regular, that it's been buried in L.A.'s cultural sandbox for years.

But as with all things culinary, even what a "hamburger's all about" can lose a bit of its luster after time. After eating a double-double yesterday, I finished off the last bite a bit underwhelmed. The bun tasted partly soggy. The lettuce, not as crisp as I remember. The "special sauce" reminded me of a Big Mac and not of their own mysterious concoction of "Thousand Island" and who knows what else. And, finally, the thin patty made me yearn for a patty, well, not as thin. Was it just me expecting more? Was eating the lauded burgers at Umami, Father's Office and other local digs ruining my expectations of a sub 4-dollar burger? Whatever the reason, it's safe to say that at the end of the day, food is food. And rarely does eating the same meal improve after the 30th time *.

Now what brings me to In-N-Out? Well, I want to talk about this word, "experience." And the old, bored Los Angeleno's question, "What does offer us something new?" Well, plenty of things. But in this town, the movie business rules. The movies -- what of this hundred-plus visual form can bring something new to us? Everyone's now talking about "Inception." And how this film should be seen twice. The layers to uncover, the depth to explore! "It requires three viewings!" A film like this, if you let it--regardless of your aesthetic bias--offers a multitude of ways to think about the story. The audience sees this film and asks, what does this all mean? What do I think about this, or this? It stirs in us an experience that drags on after the film is over. And isn't this natural for us to crave some kind of new experience? A feeling of a more permanent pleasure, one found in doing any of the such: to laugh more, cry more, think about more, escape to more of what feels rewarding. The more enriching the experience, the more satisfaction is gained, usually found in less temporary stimulants. Here, I'm not talking strictly of films that need to offer what we call "complexity" in the Hollywood notion of "story." After all, there can be great versions of entertainment for the masses. In fact, I'd definitely list "Commando" as one of my all-time favorites films without any hesitation--a visceral pleasure free of guilt. It offers nothing of the kind of spiritual depth of "La Dolce Vita" or emotional indulgence of "Cinema Paradiso." Nor, the intellectually-challenging implications of "2001: A Space Odyssey" or an ambitious storytelling labyrinth like the mentioned "Inception." But as we love to say, "it is what it is."

And this rounds up my final thought in that through any kind of film people make, one often asks: what kind of experience can this film bring? And, is it the best I can do to make this happen? I hope you all enjoy the experience we have in making this film and experience the finished film in your own way. And in doing so, it leads to a more rewarding experience the second time. And the third time.

I'll post a pic below of the disappointing In-N-Out burger regardless. Because, as a dog returns to its own vomit, or in this case, a 9-and-sinking out of 10 burger, I'll order it once again.

*I probably have eaten In-N-Out more than 30 times since being in LA for over 5 years. That's not a bad yearly average of 6! But then again, it sounds really unhealthy when taken in its total. How many times have you eaten your top fast food item over the last five years?

We're Past 25% Funded! Casting Actors and More...

    To Our Supporters,

I want to thank you for your generous support so far! The pledges for “The Afterlife” have been arriving quickly and we hope to keep pushing hard over the weekend to make our goal by August 9th. Just a reminder that in order to make this film happen, the project MUST be funded 100% by then!

The project is developing quite nicely and with "The Afterlife" already past the 25% funded mark, we are right on track!

I am telling people about our project, people who have nothing to do with the entertainment industry. The woman in Koreatown who cuts my hair, the guy who appraised my car's damage after an accident – anyone who will listen counts! I know this about our seemingly cold society today: People become excited when they encounter passion in others. A passion that begins with a dream. And turning dreams into visions and visions into reality is possible only with one’s ability to ask for help. So I thank you for your contributions.

What’s next for us? Casting! We are putting out casting calls for actors in the upcoming week. The film calls for only a few roles, so this will be tremendous fun narrowing down the many talented actors in this town. I enjoy the casting process because for me, meeting all sorts of people and sharing emotional experiences with them in the audition room is a fun challenge. It's also very unpredictable and I usually leave the room appreciative of how hungry people are to do something they love for a living. Even if they show up late, inebriated or upset. But acting audition stories are for another day!

We'll keep you posted on the next development for our film. Please continue to check in and do tell others that you're helping make a movie come alive! Tell your friends that even a small pledge can make a difference -- save spending $5 on a large coffee at Starbucks this weekend or an expensive drink and you'll not only consume less calories but move closer to completing a project you're already involved in with us : )

Have a rewarding weekend and make it memorable.

    Best,

    The Support Continues!

    Hey Guys,

So great to wake up to another generous supporter helping us reach our goal. We are now at 3% of the film funded with 18 days left to do it. Definitely on the path to making this film a reality.

Thank you so much to our supporters and anyone who has helped spread the word about THE AFTERLIFE. Everytime you guys mention the project we are that much closer to making it a reality.

This is an amazing platform and I can't wait to see how the next 18 days unfold.

    Oh one more thing:
One of our early goals is to make sure people beyond our social network know about this project. If you have a blog, or even a twitter/facebook, one post can make all the difference to us.

Our hope is you'll spread the word that we're making this project and are looking for people to help back this Kickstarter campaign.

Feel free to e-mail me at info@theafterlifefilm.com or just show some love on this project page.

The support feels great. Thanks so much guys.
