Posted project update #21Two Tape Documentaries on Kickstarter
Hey, everyone, Jason Scott here.
My calendar is filling up! Trips to Helsinki, California, Texas, Maryland and more are starting to solidify, as well as the beginnings of reaching out to dozens of potential interviewees all over the place. The equipment works great, the sound is amazing, and I can focus on what's the most important aspect - capturing the stories I want to tell in these projects. It's all going well and again, there's a weblog for it: http://documentary.textfiles.com - frequent updates will go there.
Today, though, I just wanted to point out two documentaries seeking funding, and my philosophy on them.
The first is in really good shape: REWIND THIS! is a documentary on the VHS tape. Looks like they're almost done with it, and are just doing finishing touches and one or two last trips. The kickstarter link is http://kck.st/AEhmm8
The second needs help. Called CASSETTE, it is 3 days away from close and is only 30% of the way to their goal. Their link is http://kck.st/t9UF5k and I've seen projects pull from behind at this point, but to do it people need to spread the word and act fast.
And just for a moment, I wanted to address the question of "why promote other documentaries with the same subject"? Based on the love and support I got from you all during my own kickstarter drive, I think the answer is clear, but I wanted to make it absolutely clear.
Making a documentary is REALLY HARD. Like, really super hard. I know some people saw the typewriter film, which was shot in two hours and edited in same, and go "well, you did that quickly", but think about that I hauled all this equipment to my buddy's house, took his afternoon, shot all manner of stuff, then edited it down to around 2 minutes. That's a lot of work! Now imagine you're making something that goes for an hour and a half, and which draws in many interviews, dozens of locations, tons of shots, and it just expands out in pure temporal cost. And then it all has to have EDITORIAL SENSE. Trust me - making something like that is not just a lot of work, but sustained, straight work for months and months. Years.
So when I see someone with subject matter overlapping mine, my first thought isn't "Oh no, my lock on this subject is not 100%" - it's "oh, you poor bastards" and a few dollars thrown their way. It's just such a difficult process to make something great out of so much material. So I backed both those projects and wish them well! Consider doing so too.
Speaking of tough work: About two years and change ago, Lorien Green came to me to ask about ideas for a documentary she wanted to do on board games (the "euro-style" games that are more complicated than the board game types many americans are familiar with) and I provided support, ideas, some equipment and ultimately co-edited the final work with her. That DVD is heading out to the printers this week or next (we're doing QA on the DVD to make sure it's all working) and has gone up for sale now. It's called "Going Cardboard" and is here: http://www.boardgamemovie.com/ - for a fun link, a good portion of the soundtrack comes from Tony Longworth, who was one of the contributing musicians for GET LAMP. People who've seen it have noted how my editing style is quite obvious for a lot of it, so if that's what you need more of, there you go.
Thanks again! More information as it comes!

Cassette just made it over the line. Your post definitely helped them for my backing amount, thanks for pointing them out.
