Posted project update #9EXPEDITION: SUCCESS!
Post CommentHi everyone!
This is T Edward Bak, confirming that the WILD MAN drawing expedition has come to a successful closure. I departed from Bellingham, Washington for Juneau aboard the M/V Columbia on July 23. After spending a week exploring Juneau, and conducting research with the invaluable staff and resources of the Alaska State Museum and Alaska State Historical Archives, a harrowing 3-hour double-prop PenAir flight from Anchorage delivered me across the Alaskan peninsula and the eastern Aleutian islands/borough to the island of Unalaska. I spent a week exploring, photographing and documenting the island habitat and wildlife, and learning about Unangan culture through a small family of native fishermen living/working in Akutan, and through the resources of the Museum of the Aleutians in Dutch Harbor/Unalaska. I boarded the M/V Tustumena a few days later, sailing east across the island chain, recording everything possible along the 3-day journey, which proceeded in the opposite direction of the western route taken by the St. Peter in the summer of 1741.
In a few days, I will be posting journal entries, drawings and photographs from the expedition to my antizerogravity blog, where you can read all about the excursion and adventure. Later this year, I'll be publishing a small journal about the WILD MAN expedition, too.
Anyhow, just a quick note to let you all know how everything went:
Fantastically. Thanks to you all. -

Posted project update #8WE DID IT
With days to go, even!
I don't even know how to begin to express my gratitude. This is one of the greatest things I could have possibly imagined doing in my lifetime. I am humbled, privileged and honored to be engaged in this endeavor with all of you in mind.
Meanwhile, I just completed the design for the last "Beasts of the Sea" print - the Northern fur seal - and will cut the linoleum block (as well as the Pallas cormorant design) and print this week. It's also time to buy supplies and make solid travel arrangements.
Unalaska, I'm on my way.
I couldn't have done it without all of you. Thank you.

Posted project update #715 days to go! Can you help?
Post CommentHi. I can't thank everyone enough for their contributions and support of this project. This weekend, I'll be post a new pledge reward for the "WILD MAN" drawing expedition project. Anything you can do to help spread the word would be greatly appreciated, and please remember that this work will only be completed because of your support! That ought to feel pretty good when you're holding a copy of the published book, or reading the next episode of "WILD MAN" serialized in MOME.
Anyhow, just wanted to thank you all for your love and support. Couldn't do it without you.
Always,

Posted project update #6Sea Otter print. And the "WILD MAN" WIDGET.
Post CommentHi, friends. Wow. Getting close. Today we're less than $1200 from the $3000 goal. You'll notice that there is a new image posted to the "WILD MAN" profile page, a sea otter print I've made as part of the "Beasts of the Sea" series supplement for my graphic novel. I've also posted the new print at my blog here http://antizerogravity.blogspot.com/ and will print and post at least one more design before the end of the fundraiser!
I'd also like to thank everyone for their support of this project and remind you all that there is a widget available for you to post to your blog or other site. The widget link is located beneath and to the right of the new sea otter print posted as the profile image; a window will pop up directing you to cut-and-paste the HTML code and you'll be good to go. It will look like this once the code is pasted:Re-posting the link and/or the widget counts as a contribution, big-time, so don't be shy! Copy and paste that html and throw it up anywhere you can! The more people who know about this, the better the chances are that the "WILD MAN" goal will be reached and I will follow through on my drawing expedition in the Aleutians.
Again, everyone, your generosity is appreciated beyond my ability to express gratitude. I'm humbled by everyone's efforts and support.
Thank you all for everything.
Always,

Posted project update #5Steller sea lion print!
Post CommentHi, everyone! Thanks for taking the time to circulate the "WILD MAN" drawing expedition link among your contacts. We're almost at the halfway point, and still going stong, but I felt like it was time for a new update, so today I've posted one of the reward prints to my blog (where you can read an excerpted preview of "Wild Man" episodes, btw) at the link here:
http://antizerogravity.blogspot.com
I've had the very good fortune of seeing hundreds of Steller sea lions in the animal's natural habitat at a haul-out in the mouth of the Inside Passage's Icy Strait (and while kayaking in Glacier Bay a couple of years ago, several curious ones got very up-close and personal!) There is no word in the English language to describe the magnificent beauty of this ancient sirenian. But the Tlingit people of southeast Alaska (relying upon this creature whom they refer to as "taan" for sustenance) use "latseen" to describe a sense of power and strength. And it is this "latseen" which I believe adequately conveys the profound might and energy I found myself in awe of upon observing this incredible "Beast of the Sea" in its environment.
Anyhow, friends, thanks again for all your support! Let's see if we can overtake the halfway point this weekend!
Always,

Posted project update #4New "WILD MAN" episode on blog!
Post CommentSo, contained in 2 new posts on my antizerogravity blog I've posted a preview of an episode which will appear in the summer and fall 2010 volumes of Mome.
http://antizerogravity.blogspot.com
The episode concerns Georg Steller's marriage to Helena Brigitta, who at first agreed to accompany her husband on the Second Kamchatka Expedition, across Siberia. As later episodes reveal, Frau Steller did not make it very far, and Steller spent the rest of his life heartbroken over the matter.
Meanwhile, we just hit the $1300 mark, thanks to you!
This weekend I'll be posting some sample prints of the Steller sea lion and the sea otter, from "Beasts of the Sea". So, check out the new artwork, and please help spread the word about "WILD MAN".
Thanks again, everyone!
