    Audio update! Hartford, precious STATS!

    Dear dear supporters,

    Audio update!

I keep meaning to sit down and write these amazing, comprehensive updates. I put it off until I can really do it right, which means I just put it off. So in order to keep you updated and sidestep my perfectionist based procrastination, I recorded a little audio update you can listen to below. Listen to it.

    Notes from the audio

Here's some relevant links and tidbits I refer to in the audio:

    The numbers

Because everyone asks even though they don't matter (listen to the audio).

Decordova Museum grand total – True: 3422, False: 2835

    Boston Tour:
    Somerville – True: 69 False: 82
    Hyde Park – True: 15 False: 24
    Mass Art/Huntington – True: 49 False: 120
Newton North High – True: 184 False: 93 ⬅ the most expensive public high school building, perhaps in the country.

The total on the tour was True: 317 to False: 319

    Happy now?

    My dad is calling again

Dad is feeling better and making calls again. If you get a random call from a 707 area code, that's him.

I'll be in Canada, will you?

I'm giving a lecture at City Hall in Kitchener, Ontario for CAFK+A so you should come.

    Thanks all!

    NPR Boston this morning

That's me, driving the sign to Davis Square in Boston while WBUR's Andrea Shea interviews me from the passenger seat.

A story about the sign was featured on WBUR radio this morning!

You can read or listen to the 6 minute piece on WBUR's site or I attached the audio below. Have a listen and let me know what you think.

Today we were at MASSArt, the nation's only publicly-funded free-standing art school. False won by a landslide.

    More soon,

    Steve

Final Score in Somerville: 69 "capitalism works" vs 82 "getting worked."

Quick update, kust got back from Davis Square in Somerville, MA today. There's a couple news stories in the works, one on this website, another on WBUR public radio which should air monday, and a third on WVCB Channel 5 in Boston which is airing now.

We were set up and ready from 10:30 to 2:30 and the final score was 69 true vs 82 false.

I have some great responses and photos which I can't wait to share as soon as I can. We had some great conversations today. In the meantime, I retweeted some of the photos from today here: https://twitter.com/#!/stevelambert.

Tomorrow we're in the parking lot of "Price Right" in Hyde Park, Massachusetts. Same times: 10:30-2:30.

    Sounds from Berlin

The Transmediale Festival posted the sound from one the panels I was on about the sign. It was a pretty fun interview. You can hear it all or download an mp3 here.

    Thanks again for your support,

    Steve

    Upcoming

I have some photos and video to share that I will be sending out in the coming days.

The sign will be in Hartford Connecticut in May and Santa Fe New Mexico in June and July. I was recently able to add a stop at the San Diego Museum of Art in August before the sign goes to Charlie James Gallery in Los Angeles in September.

Oct 2012-Spring 2013 is open! Right now we've got a gap in locations starting around October through the spring of 2013. If anyone has some ideas of where the sign can go, please get in touch.

    Rumors

I wanted to mention a few things that aren't 100% confirmed yet but exciting.

A museum-to-be-named-later is interested in showing the sign between 2013 and 2014.

A festival in Europe may make a 2nd version of the sign that could be available to tour over there. This is the second organization I've talked to about this possibility so who knows what will happen.

    Press

I was quoted on Read Write Web about the capitalism sign and Kickstarter funding. I have a lot to say about this.

Everyone wants to know if Capitalism is working for me.

The deCordova Biennial was reviewed on GWARLiNGO

This is an extended interview I did for the ExtraEnvironmentalist Podcast that includes discussion about the sign. I haven't listened to it yet so let me know how it is!

    Catalog update

As you know, in order to save on shipping and the time spent delivering rewards I'm waiting til everything is ready. One thing we're waiting on is the catalog. All the materials are in and it's in production. When I know more I will pass it on to you.

    More soon & thanks!

Overdue deCordova update - with video

At the 2012 deCordova Biennial the Capitalism Sign is up and running and, as you can see, is surviving the New England winter:

My deCordova video is now online

Inside the museum there is a video room. It's a very stark, white box kind of thing. Originally I planned on showing some images of people who voted and transcribed statements from them written on the screen. But I realized that would read as very serious and a bit intimidating. So I went the other direction and tried to make the most down to earth video possible about the project. Here's some excerpts in which I used clips of Mad Max: Beyond Thunderdome and Rollerball to make a point.

This is a 2nd excerpt that includes some responses to the sign from Cleveland:

    Making improvements

During the install Alex Reben and I set up in a huge gallery where we could make some improvements to the sign's wiring and electronics:

We tidied up wires and added some new features which I'll talk about in a future update.

I also presented the sign in this building in Berlin

This is the House of World Cutures in Berlin where I presented Capitalism Works For Me! True/False at the 2012 Transmediale Festival. I'll have some video up of those talks soon.

For now it's installed in the front of the museum and the sign will tour Boston in early April. After that it goes on to Hartford, CT.

    'Til next time!

Invites for Boston DeCordova Museum Opening Saturday

First things first: if you can make it to Boston this Saturday I have special tickets for you for the Saturday opening of the DeCordova Biennial where you can finally get your money's worth and see this beast in person. I'd love to shake your hand and show you to the voting podium!

If you are in the Boston area this weekend, get in touch ASAP and I will do my best to help you out. If you contributed more than $1000 I will personally give you a ride out there in this cheaply rented Chevy Impala I got for the week (from Boston area only, some restrictions may apply). It has heated seats.

    Installation time!

The crates arrived safe and sound in Boston. It was the first time I'd seen them in person and all together they are bigger than a rented Chevy Impala. Way bigger! I can't believe we made something that goes in such big boxes! Much less the thing itself. I meant to grab some pictures, but they put the crates away before I could. Will try again in the coming days.

The installation crew did get the frame up today:

This is the entry way to the museum facing out to the parking lot and some of the sculpture garden. It was freezing. Literally. Like below 32 degrees freezing.

Next Alex (remember Alex from Update #5?) and I are going to be making some improvements to the sign, scoreboard, and voting interface. Alex (who's own work has been making the rounds lately) lives in Boston, so we're finally going to be able to tweak things we noticed back in round one like:

    • better electronic communication between the arduino powered brain and the numbers
    • better connections using ethernet cable instead of stranded wire
    • a massive loud boxing bell that will ring whenever people vote
    • some other stuff that is not as interesting

I'll be taking more photos and shooting video so you'll get another round of updates more often in the coming week or two.

What's happening with the SPACES catalog? (aka where is my stuff)

I am now the bottleneck. Paul F. Tompkins is as good as his word and delivered the essay. Now we have to edit it down. I need to work on that and I've been busy with this show... but I have not forgotten. I will keep you updated.

    'Til soon!

    Steve

Well, the show will be up for about 3 months, so maybe it will be around when you get back?
