Posted project update #4Thanks For Your Support
Sad to say Couches of Detroit did not go the distance. It was ambitious. I just wanted to take a minute to thank you to you all for your participation in the project, encouragement and support. As an artist, it is a blessing to discover anyone who is interested in the strange things my mind insists are important.
Hopefully you still have time to find a reasonable alternative for your 2012 calendar needs.

Thanks for the link to your Small Victories web site. Count me in as an enthusiast. I think the strips are very book-worthy, or at least calendar-worthy (but how many calendars does one need per year?). I'd pledge for a Kickstarter project to see a Small Victories book and/or calendar happen.
Meanwhile, best of luck with the still viable Couches project. I am hugely on board with reusing, re-viewing, and repurposing of Stuff.

Posted project update #2...
Post CommentSadly, after a strong kickoff, fundraising efforts seem to be dwindling to a halt. The scope of the fundraising was indeed ambitious.
Still, there's 25 days left, and anything is possible! One thing that would be a great help is if backers like you can spread the word about the project - self promotion only goes so far, and often media venues are more likely to follow up on third-party tips. I am especially interested in reaching Detroit websites and news sources, so if anyone has time to drop a hint in that direction, it could help the project enormously. Thanks for your support! I'd love to see this project go the distance. Detroit is working hard to change its image, but I think it's equally valuable for people to change their perspective on waste and start seeing used things as having remaining potential.

Posted project update #1COD Video
Post CommentHello All,
First of all, thank you to my backers! We're off to a good start. I've made a few changes around here, so I want to keep you up to date.
Over the weekend, I made a video for the project - it's a little tour of Detroit the way I see it on a daily basis, and I thought you might be interested to check it out.
Also, I've made the decision to donate 10% of my funds raised to the Shipherd Greens Community Garden - a great neighborhood organization that can really use the support getting on its feet. Their goal is to buy the garden lot that they've been leasing from the city for the last 3 years, and build a rain-catching gazebo once they own the property. The lot may run anywhere from $300-$700, so I'm excited at the potential for our efforts to make a real difference in the neighborhood.
That's it for now, but remember that any word-of-mouth you can create by passing my link along, especially to anyone interested in Detroit, the future of localized food production, salvage culture or the post-industrial reinvention of America, can help Couches of Detroit meet its funding goals.
Thanks for all you've done already!

Posted project update #22Couches of Detroit
Post CommentHello Kickstarter Friends,
Since moving to Detroit, I've had great opportunities to consider a set of surroundings and economic circumstances very different from that of New York City, and have begun to create art that is reflective of this new environment. Foremost among my ongoing projects is Couches of Detroit - a set of 12 urban landscapes, each featuring an abandoned couch on the streets of Detroit, to be transformed into a full-color 2012 calendar.
Today I have launched a kickstarter page for Couches of Detroit. Printing costs for the calendar are greatly reduced if I order in bulk; my hope is to secure 500 pre-orders that will enable me to offer this calendar for only $15, including postage. If my goal is met by July 1st, the calendar will be available September 1st.
The kickstarter page can be found here: http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/sarawithanh/couches-of-detroit
Any support you can offer, whether by pledging or simply spreading the word, is much appreciated.
Yours,Sarah Sharp

Posted project update #21Postcards to the People
Hi guys,
If you pledged for postcards, you probably got an email asking for your pertinent information so I can send them out to you. For people getting less than the full set of 50, there was an option to specify either 1 state from the set of 10 or 3 from the set of 25, but then apparently no place for you to actually tell me which you want.
You can do that here, if you like. Postcards should arrive today and start going out this week, so do that soon, if you care to.
Incidentally, if you live in NYC and would like to see some of this work in person, I'll be part of a group show, opening this Friday at the Think Gallery, part of Think Coffee on Mercer St. in Manhattan. More info here: http://thinkgallerynyc.com/
If you live in NYC, already pledged for postcards, and would rather pick them up in person at the show, just let me know and I can give them to you in person!
Thanks!

I'd like Maine (my home state), New York (my current state) and New Jersey (my husband's home state). Thanks! Can't wait to see them!

postcards have, for the most part, gone out today. I filled all the special requests I saw here.

Got my postcards through today! Many thanks - they're really great. To know they have been picked personally makes them even better. Great work, Sarah.

Sorry to hear of the cancellation. I have a friend from Detroit and it would have made a great Christmas gift. Hopefully you can find another worthwhile project.
How about a calendar with your entertaining food images--plastic goldfish swimming in carrot soup, square dance, and the rest of the gang? We all need something to laugh about hanging on our walls all year! Otherwise, I'm sure another amazing project will rise to the top of your fertile mind--and, when it does, let me know!
Sarah, I'm sorry you didn't reach your goal. I thought your "Trash Talk" update was well argued. I'll be looking forward to your next Kickstarter project.
