Sneak peek, and a pre-release track (and title!)

    Hello Dear Backers!
Hoping this message reaches you at the beginning of a restful weekend with family and friends - the past few months of our project have been quiet here on Kickstarter, and I hope you've been enjoying the rewards you have received so far. I've been treading exciting waters with several rounds of arduous editing of our album, alongside a busy Philharmonic schedule, concerts for the homeless, mentally ill and incarcerated through Street Symphony, and talks at the Idea Project in Los Angeles, TEDx's in Santa Barbara and San Diego, and most recently at the INK Conference in Jaipur, India.

The fact that the label, our magnificent Yarlung recording engineers Bob Attiyeh and Jacob Horowitz are still on speaking terms with me could be chalked up to a year-long holiday miracle - and now, with all of our tracks compiled, the next step is mastering and producing the album, which will be printed in Germany and be ready for distribution on April, 2012. However, that's far too long a wait for my backers! I'm very happy and excited to present all of you with two tracks from the CD, available to you pre-release: the "Istanpitta" in the video below, which I encourage you to share with your family and friends, and HIF Biber's "Passacaglia", via a downloadable link which will be sent to backers exclusively.

The famous German composer Robert Schumann, who himself suffered from schizophrenia and passed away in asylum, said, "To send light into the darkness of men's hearts - such is the duty of the artist", and in that spirit, we have titled our album "Suryodaya", the Sanskrit word for "sunrise", which compels us to recall our inner light - a light that rises with music.

This project would not be possible without your support, and there are several angels who contributed their presence and advice, without which this project would not have existed at all: Bob Attiyeh and Jacob Horowitz at Yarlung, Jerry and Terri Kohl for their generous use of the "Milstein" Strad for this project, Cooper Bates for his eye, his support and presence - and for his Hint Mints, his gorgeous photos and these video updates, Joseph Pereira and Daniel Rothmuller for their musical presence during the recording session, and Yana Reznik for her CDs and support. A belated, huge thanks to Perry Chen at Kickstarter, the TED Fellows Team for their presence and advice pre-launch.

Wishing you all a very happy holiday and 2012!
    Yours,
    Robert

    Labor Day Hello!

Dear Friends - hope this note finds you well.

We are just a few weeks away from finishing up our Hollywood Bowl season at the Philharmonic, and will return to the gorgeous Walt Disney Concert Hall at the end of September. I can't believe I had that stage all to myself for our recording!
A quick note on our progress - we're starting to put tracks together to edit, and then our incredible engineers at Yarlung Records will begin to master and produce the record. We'll hope to have it to you by the beginning of next year, but we'll send little teasers here and there. Hoping you are enjoying the rewards you've received so far!

In the mean time, wanted to pass along a link to an LA Times OpEd piece I wrote for Labor Day about my first job at the LA Philharmonic: http://www.latimes.com/news/opinion/commentary/la-oe-jobs-20110904,0,7097550.story?page=1. You're welcome to read Mayor Villaraigosa's piece first, though.

As many of you know, I'm in the process of starting an organization that will continue to bring live classical music in the form of outreach concerts to the most underprivileged and underserved members of our community. Many of you have already participated in the Street Symphony at the Department of Mental Health or at the Villages at Cabrillo in Long Beach. I wanted to share two brief pieces from our first event, which aired on KPCC (LA's NPR station) and KUSC (LA's leading classical music station), respectively. Enjoy!

    Thank you!

As rewards start to go out today, I keep thinking about the incredible two days when I had Disney Hall all to myself, and honestly, I can't believe that it happened! The only proof I have are the beautiful photos taken by my friend and phenomenal photo/video editor, Cooper Bates, and this Kickstarter page. This really is a wild, wild dream come true, and it would not have happened without your trust and support, and for that, I am beyond words, beyond grateful. Thank you. We start editing soon, and after the mastering and processing, we'll begin printing CDs. I'll be posting updates here and subsequently on my new blog at Posterous (link to follow soon) - we plan to have the CDs out to you close to the end of this year. This may seem like a long time, but it would only be by the Herculean efforts of the Yarlung team that the project would make it that far, and so quickly! Once again, my deepest thanks to Bob Attiyeh at Yarlung for his grace and perseverance, to Badal Roy for his tremendous artistry, to Yana Reznik for her friendship and encouragement, and to Cooper Bates, for his calm presence, his keen eye, and indomitable spirit. And above all, to all of you, for trusting in the music of one single violin. Yours, Robert
