    the halfway point

yesterday marked the halfway point of the project, and even though i'm not quite to the halfway point of funding, i'm very confident i can reach my goal.

i've written up a few of my thoughts about the project on the tumblr i've set up. check it out here, if you'd like:

a little friday love (a.k.a. unfinished business part 3)

it's a rainy day here today, so i thought it best to spread a little joy.

    first, this:

the big stack is all of the submissions that have now been sketched out, and are ready to paint. (actually there's about 20-30 more sitting on my desk. forgot to throw them in the stack)

and here's a few more in progress pieces, cuz you folks love em so much:

    unfinished business (part 2)

been a copy of busy days... got called up at the last minute to teach a kid's class about architecture, so that's consumed by time a bit.

well, that, and answering all of your e-mails :)

so here's a tiny in progress update before the weekend. these were done a few days ago, just didn't have the time to get to them.

things have settled down now, so expect the awesome to resume next week! :)

    unfinished business

you guys go crazy whenever i post peeks at things, especially in progress pieces, so that's what i'm gonna do.

    20 of them today.

and i'll likely be doing the same every day over the next week or two. starting the pieces is the part of the process that's super fun, and i want to give as many people as possible a little glimpse of what they're getting in order to keep the excitement up.

    enjoy!

    and be awesome!

a change... an article and video about me and not by me!

one of my very first backers, Scott Warren, writes articles and makes videos for the local community journalism site The Rapidian (http://therapidian.org). he was awesome enough to make a little video of me and write an article to help get more local interest in my project.

the article is awesome. and you get to actually see me in the video!

    uncharted waters and course corrections

i'm not quite sure why i love naval metaphors so much, i'm horribly afraid of water. and heights. bridges are my life's nemesis.

settle back, this is a lengthy one :)

anyway... there are times when you've embarked on a new voyage to somewhere you haven't been before, and you feel as if you're going in the right direction, but just a little bit off course. even just tiny degree off, and after a time you're lost in the middle of nowhere.

that's the feeling i had the middle of last week. this is a huge project, and a lot of work, and i need to know i'm on the right course. and i felt i wasn't, in terms of my workflow and process.

in order to get all these paintings done, i need to produce 5-10 of them a day. that's a lot. and i can't spend much time on time. and i was spending way too much time on them. as my girlfriend said to me, "you're being far too particular."

so, what to do? a slight change of course needed to be made. upon chance, while cleaning my studio, i rediscovered where this voyage began.

i found an old sketchbook and a set of old photos from art school, circa 1997 (yikes!). in the sketchbook, i found one of the very first sketches of lizardlad, the little guy that's in a lot of my paintings, originally intended for some animation i was working on. here he is:

you may recognize him from some later paintings, and my business card:

at the time, i was mainly doing large figurative paintings, nothing like the work i currently do. from that early sketch though, i did a small series of paintings, which i had forgotten about, but were part of my senior exhibition. i ran across a pic of these in an old pile of junk.

seeing these pics from 1997, i realized where this current project was coming from, and where it needed to go, artistically.

i needed to simplify, not just for the sake of getting things done, but also so the individual pieces would fit into the larger scheme of this exhibition, which will look a little bit like this:

with the way the paintings were going, the multitude of colors in them was going to destroy that grid. i needed to simplify, and go back to the more monochrome nature of my very first pieces in this style.

so, that brings us to today's update. several days were spent figuring out exactly how i was going to do this. hence the lack of updates last week, except for the fun little video. that was meant as a bit of a sneak peek :)

anyway... time for pictures! a few you've seen already, now in a slightly different form. and a few new goodies as well. colors aren't the best, coming from my phone and all...

enjoy. and once again a huge thank you to all of you who are helping to make this happen!

expect more new pics coming at a faster pace from now on :)

It's tough to tell in the video, but the color is still there as an undertone. The process and the aesthetic decision will make more sense in a coming update :)

@shine well, that's the whole idea. but if someone with way too much money burning a hole in their pocket wants to help, who am I to argue? that's why the reward is limited to one person. and if it helps me meet the goal, all the better. after all, if the goal isn't reached, it doesn't happen for anybody.

    the 128 BIT reward

so, lots of people have been telling me that i'm charging way too little for this project.

    they're right.

but this project is not so much about the money as it is about the involvement of lots and lots of people.

that said, i've noticed that many of the successful projects on kickstarter have had at least a few high dollar pledges.

so, i figured i'd do the same.

but i had to make it fun. and that means pizza. so here it is:

thank you thank you thank you to everyone who has backed the project so far, and thanks for spreading the word. i can't do this without your help. and spreading the word and getting other people involved is one of the most important things you can do :)

    this update isn't super exciting...

last night was spent doing a lot of prep work.

a base coat of color was applied to around 150 or 160 boards.

designs were sketched out on 74 of those boards.

the photo below is the result.

the first stack is the 74 that i've got the designs sketched out on.

the second tiny stack are those words and phrases that have me currently stumped.

the third stack is all the pledges i've received, but no words submitted yet. *ahem*

    things are taking shape :)

    tiny update today...

got started on things a bit late yesterday, so only managed to get three paintings done. i need to work on better organizing my time in order to get this done. it's a lot of work! i know it will get easier once i REALLY dive into it and i refine my workflow though. i have enough submissions now to really get started :)

i'm probably gonna do most of the updates after this through tumblr and/or flickr, and post the links here. this updates section is gonna get a bit crammed otherwise :)

    anyway... enjoy! and thanks!

but, i owe all you awesome people something, so here's an in progress peek at some of the paintings... something that hardly anyone ever gets to see!

expect to see some finished ones late today/early tomorrow!

what do 1024 paintings look like?

well, i'm not sure. but i just chopped up the panels for 300 or so. that's enough to keep me busy for the next couple weeks.

and only minor physical damage to myself!

now that the boards are chopped, expect an update with images of the first submissions to be come this weekend :)
