Posted project update #12Letter from Leo Mintek of Outernational
Post CommentWe've got big news! The new record Todos Somos Ilegales will drop any day now. A new US tour begins Monday Dec 26th, starting with an NYC HEADLINING HOMECOMING show at BOWERY ELECTRIC. Kickstarter gifts are boxing and shipping now and there's a big holiday merch sale - including out first ever Hoodies, Vinyls and $7 Shirts. This merch sale is so important to keep the band afloat and moving forward, please take a look and pick something up for yourself or as holiday gifts: http://outernational.bigcartel.com
9 MONTHS AGO...
9 months ago we jumped in the van and drove from Brooklyn to the California coast, we packed what we had and let everything else go. 3 months before that, in December 2010 Chad Smith joined us on stage for the first time in a very special NYC holiday show. The chemistry and passion that night led Chad to suggest we cut a record together. So there we were 3 months later, putting it all on the line and driving 72 hours and 3000 miles to begin writing and recording 'Welcome To The Revolution'. As we left we had a few of the songs for what we conceived as a 6-song EP: 'Todos Somos Ilegales'.
With no record label we decided the only way to do this was to bring the fans deep into the process - to raise the funds in small donations - not a small task when over $20,000 was needed. Upon arriving in California we launched the Kickstarter fundraising campaign in April 2011... casting our lot with the people to create revolutionary art and music for the moment.
AND NOW HERE WE ARE...
Its December 2011. Much has changed since last April - as we left, the Arab Spring was inspiring the world and now the defiantly new Occupy movement is at a crossroads. Once again we are poised to make a straight shot 3000 mile journey across the country to bring you 'Todos Somos Ilegales' - now a full length 18-track mixtape album.
Everything is building to the release of 'Welcome To The Revolution', coming in 2012. And we did it all with the money you contributed - over $20,000 on Kickstarter. Gifts are being packaged and mailed as I type. As always is true for the artistic process, a little more is needed - about $5000 - to cover the cost of extending 'Todos' into a full length record with special guest artists. We'll be raising more funds through a 'Pay What You Will' feature on the release. Of course all of you who gave (and anyone else in fact) can download the album for free. But this is an important way to cover the expenses. It's also a way to involve all the new people who discover Outernational, encouraging them to come get involved - even financially - and really join our team and extended family who want to see so much more for the future... a whole other way...
So here we are 9 months later, returning from a wild west journey, back to New York with these 2 new albums and a sharper mission and artistic vision. If you are in NYC come out and celebrate with us DECEMBER 26 at Bowery Electric - our last headlining show of 2011, our now annual holiday show and our last show before we go back on the road (wait till you hear about this one!) 2012 will bring hundreds of Outernational tour dates, in, around and through the borders of the world.
We want to thank you all for your support, for your investments, for your love and friendship. Thank you for sharing with us your hopes and dreams. Thank you for listening to something that may have challenged the way you think. Thank you for your financial support of the band, we continue to rely on you to sustain Outernational as we get out into the world in 2012. You can continue to support and fund the band by picking up a new merch item in the store - hoodies, vinyls, CDs, shirts… Every single purchase helps us keep gas in the tank and move ahead!
So, future rockers, we write to you with love in our hearts and the horizon in our eyes. We look forward to next year - to new changes and breakthroughs in the world and all the new artistic opportunities ahead. We look forward to coming through your town, whether it's in Nebraska, Mexico, or maybe even Sweden and beyond…
Enjoy the new music as it arrives. Share it and spread the world about Outernational and help contribute to a new culture in 2012. Continue to financially support Outernational as you can. Continue to bring your energy and your fire to the shows. And keep dreaming… I've got these dreams / When I sleep / And I've got these dreams / That really could be! (Fighting Song)
TO THE FUTURE!!!

Posted project update #10WE ARE ALMOST DONE!
Post CommentHello all! Been a while since we wrote to you, apologies for the delays as we have been neck-deep in recording and making plans to make sure this music you paid for gets out in a proper way! The Todos Somos Ilegales project has been expanded from an EP to a full-length mixtape! We've been recording even more songs and have some exciting surprise guest appearances I can't mention yet... It will be available for free next month, and you all get the first downloads. We've been inspired by the occupy movement around the US - starting on Wall St in NYC and spreading to hundreds of cities. We've been performing in downtown Los Angeles, and tomorrow we return to NYC where we will soon be in the streets at Liberty Park standing and singing with the 99%!
Okay more updates - The new Que Queremos / The Disappeared 7"s are ready, and the new customized designer t-shirts, not to mention the autographed 12"s, and other gear like Chad Smith's drum sticks etc. We'll be sending out your reward mailings before the end of the month. If you have changed your address please reply here or send a message to futurerock@outernational.net with your new address. I'll be sending a reminder about this next week before they ship.
Lastly, we are making the first music video for the full length album Welcome To The Revolution, watch out! Keep in touch with us, we have a new blog here: http://outernationalband.tumblr.com/ posting videos, photos, articles about the band and the world.
If you're in NYC, come catch us on Tuesday for CMJ, we're putting together a one-night-only special expanded band to play new songs from the Todos Somos Ilegales mixtape.
We in Outernational extend our deep thanks to you all, for supporting this project and making it possible. Without your contributions this Spring, we would not be making these 2 new recording projects and would not be able to make revolutionary art to challenge the powers that be and reach out to this generation. THANK YOU!
TO THE FUTURE!

Posted project update #9Outernational Update and News
Post CommentHello! Writing to fill you in on what's been happening in the 2+ months since the completion of the Kickstarter campaign, where so many of you gave your money, your time, and your words to raise over $20K to fund Outernational's recordings. Again, we are tremendously inspired and driven by your sincere efforts, including that of Alejandro Del Fuego who soon after lost his battle with cancer.
We have finished recording and mixing Outernational's first full length album: 'Welcome To The Revolution'. 12 songs performed by the 5 man team: Miles Solay (lead vocals and 2nd guitar), Leo Mintek (lead guitar and vocals), Jesse Williams Massa (bass and vocals), Dr Blum (organ, piano, trumpet, accordion, vocals) and Chad Smith (drums, backup vocals). Legendary engineer Jim Scott recorded and mixed the record in a very raw and live way, capturing an energy and urgency only seen previously at an Outernational live show. We are preparing to master the record and are working hard to find the best way to release it, so that not only you, but thousands more worldwide will be able to hear and discover it.
As well as writing and recording the album with us, Chad Smith joined us for 3 ferocious concerts in los angeles: at the legendary Roxy and Troubadour plus a streaming-live-on-the-web show from DW's Drum Channel. The drum channel concert is being edited and will be available again on the web soon.
The Todos Somos Ilegales free EP is on the way, with a slight delay, but believe me it will be worth it!! Big surprises to come on this EP which will feature special guest appearances, new songs, reinvented covers, and the Outernational anthem 'Que Queremos'. (other kickstarter gifts will be going out around the EP release thanks for your patience!!)
This week we are working on the title track for the EP and will be headlining The Sound Strike's benefit concert in downtown LA this Friday July 29.
Last week we travelled throughout California in support of the prisoner's hunger strike centered at Pelican Bay and spreading throughout CA prisons. Demanding an end to the inhumane physical and psychological torture of the SHU (secure housing units) the strike has been the largest US prison action since the 1971 Attica Prison Rebellion. Outernational travelled to the gates of Pelican Bay in the farthest northwest corner of the state (13 hours from LA) and also to the state capital to support the strikers, to meet with family members, revolutionaries and humanitarians, and to draw attention to and inspiration from the action. More to come on this…
This year, you can look forward to more Outernational performances and videos, plus a stream of new releases, including more musical projects not even mentioned here yet!

Posted project update #7SUCCESS! We did it together!
Post CommentHi everyone! It has been 4 inspiring weeks and together we built a community of backers and funded two new Outernational recordings with no record label, no music company, just you and us together! THANK YOU for making it happen!
We are now setting the stage for the 'Todos Somos Ilegales' release, more details coming soon, including videos and collaborations with The Sound Strike and other groups.
A few people's payments were declined, make sure to respond to the Kickstarter "Action Needed" emails about fixing this if it happens to you.
Now that funding is secured we will be mastering (the final audio preparation for) 'Todos Somos Ilegales' and printing the 'Que Queremos / The Disappeared' 45s that many of you will receive as rewards. Please be patient with us as it takes 6 weeks or so to make vinyls, from cutting the Lacquer master, to plating inverted stampers, to then pressing the actual vinyls themselves...
Next week we are heading back into Jim Scott's PLYRZ studio to finish recording the full length album, we have 13 new songs 'basic tracked' and now we are recording lead and backing vocals, guitar solos, trumpet overtures etc. Chad Smith will be coming by to add hootin and hollering, percussion etc... More details for this album will be coming soon we are aiming for a summer/fall release and endless touring to follow...
Everyone in California - watch out! We are playing the Roxy in Hollywood on June 1st, debuting the new material with Chad on the drums. More west coast shows are in the works for June, send a message if you want to book/collaborate on a show: futurerock@outernational.net
A tremendous thank you and congratulation goes out to all of you for making this happen, for your generous donations and hard work spreading the word, from making videos to writing letters, for thinking of the future and the culture and for music for this generation. We've been emboldened by the project and everyone's involvement. Together we will do great things!
ONWARD AND UPWARD! With love for a better world,
OUTERNATIONAL
