Posted project update #3All systems go
First off, I am so incredibly thankful for all of your support, and so excited that this CD is happening! It would not have happened without your help.
The recording session is tomorrow night, and I am hoping to have copies of the CD in about a month. The piece was performed for the first time this past Friday in London, and I heard it went really well. The rehearsals have been really productive, and it is great to be working with Nigel and the Peresson Quartet. These guys shred.
I just wanted to post a little sneak peek of the album art. So it's below. Enjoy, and I hope to talk to all of you soon.

Posted project update #2So just who are Nigel Armstrong and Nick Tipp?
Post CommentAs I've mentioned, the quartet is going to be performed by Nigel Armstrong and his friends from the Colburn School, and produced by Nick Tipp. I thought it might be good to offer a bit of background on these two collaborators, who I feel very lucky to work with on this.
I met Nigel through the American Youth Symphony, where he is concertmaster and I work. He and his quartet were playing a donor event, and their playing simply blew me away. Not only does he have the exact type of tone that I had pictured while writing the quartet, he brings an energy that is going to make this thing rock. He's been pretty busy winning concerto competitions all over the place, and has a couple of concerts coming up in Los Angeles (including a performance of the Brahms Double Concerto on May 8). For more information, visit nigelarmstrong.net.
Nick Tipp and I haven't met in person yet, but I am really looking forward to it with how well we've been getting along and seeing eye to eye about this recording via phone and email. I came into contact with Nick through Bedrock LA, a rehearsal and recording space in Echo Park where my band practices. I love their space, and originally thought it would be cool to record in a rock studio, for the super-clean close-mic'd sound used on a lot of rock records these days. They have a few in-house producers listed on their website, including Nick. I followed the link to his webpage, read up on his credits (LA Opera, LA Phil, The Pixies, !!!, No Age, The Decemberists, The National...the list goes on) and his approach to live recording, and knew that he would be the guy. Especially when in our first email he asked me to send him a score. Check out his website, soniferous.org, for more.
We've since decided to use a space other than Bedrock, and Nick is talking to his contacts around town to find us a church to record in for January 24. I can't wait! And thank you for helping make this possible. If you can, please send a link to this page to your friends, family, colleagues, and anyone else who has an interest in making new music happen. Thanks!
