FIRST IMAGE FROM SPENCER TUNICK’S DEAD SEA INSTALLATION REVEALED

Press Release For Immediate publication, October 25, 2011

FIRST IMAGE FROM SPENCER TUNICK’S DEAD SEA INSTALLATION REVEALED

Artist Spencer Tunick has today revealed the breathtaking first image from his historic artwork at the Dead Sea to support the global campaign to promote voting for the Dead Sea as one of the New Seven Wonders of Nature. To view the first artwork and to vote for the Dead Sea go to: www.nakedsea.info

“Naked Sea” is a grassroots project initiated in Israel to draw attention to the environmental plight of the Dead Sea. Over 1,200 people from all walks of life (from Israel & abroad) arrived just before dawn on Saturday17th September to participate in the installation. The stunning image was created in only a few hours, after all attendees stripped off and floated in unison in the Dead Sea.

“Israel is not a theocracy it is a democracy and the only place in the Middle East that I could create this art”, said Spencer Tunick. “Thanks to the participants efforts the world has a new image of Israel as an open and vibrant democracy. Israelis are some of the most beautiful, warm, educated, open minded and peaceful people that I have ever worked with”.

Several other images were taken on the shores of the Dead Sea, and later in the day at the Ein Gedi Springs & the Ein Bokek Waterfalls. There were also individual portraits taken in Tel Aviv later in the week of Tunick's visit. The full range of artwork from Israel will be prepared for a future museum exhibition.

“We’re thrilled to reveal the premier image of “Naked Sea”,” said Ari Fruchter & Shlomit Yarkoni, the initiators of the project. “Through the art of Spencer Tunick we were able to reach over 500 million people around the world with a new positive image of Israel and an important environmental message. We look forward to continuing to work with Spencer to prepare a full museum exhibition of his work”

    Final Thoughts

It is hard to imagine that it has been almost 4 years since I started to work on this project. This is a great time to do some soul searching and reminisce as to why I embarked on this long and difficult journey and what did it achieve.

First things first, I need to say thanks to all of the amazing people who made this dream come together. From Spencer and his wonderful crew – Steve, Justin, Ryan, Casey, Lauren, Dan, & Andrew. To my partner who helped save the day – Shlomit Yarkoni and the BenOr team. To my amazing Naked Sea Team in Israel – Elinor Lechtman, Elinor Ayalon Harel, Ari Gottesmann, & Maayan Ben Natan. To the sponsors – Nomadigo, BenOr, Clementina, Visible Voices, Minus 417, TimeOut, & Israel Gives. Most importantly to the Kickstarter supporters and all of the amazing participants. In addition there are many other people who helped over the years to advance this and I thank you for all your support.

So back to the $million question – why did I do this?? Well, I have known Spencer since 1992 and remember him sharing with me some art photos he took in Israel. I was blown away and amazed by his love and connection to Israel. Over the years as his career grew and his installations grew in size and media attention, I kept wondering why not Israel. When I moved back to Israel in 2007 and joined the Board of the Tel Aviv Museum of Art I decided to invest my free time in social philanthropy in the arts creating projects that would have a positive impact on the society in Israel and if lucky at the world at large. With this lofty aim – working with Spencer was a natural fit.

My goals for this project were as follows:

    1.     Help Spencer make a monumental work of art in Israel

    2.     Complete the project before 11/11/11 to make an impact on the voting for the New 7 Wonders of Nature

    3.     Create broad awareness of the Dead Sea and the environmental concerns it is facing

    4.     Demonstrate to the world that Israeli’s are not religious extremists and that we are beautiful, warm, cultured, peaceful, and open minded people

    5.     Find a wife or a girlfriend or 2

    How did we do???

    1.      Although it will take several months (4-6) until Spencer produces the art from the installation/s. I believe that we are on track.

    2.      Nailed this. There are 49 days left in the voting for the competition and I believe that we are on track to become one of the finalists. http://www.votedeadsea.com &  http://www.new7wonders.com/vote-2  If the Dead Sea wins the competition, it is estimated that more than 300,000 new tourists would visit the site each year, 12,000 new jobs would be created, and an additional NIS 300 million ($75 million) would be added to the government's budget annually. Needless to say that the Dead Sea would be saved.

3.&4. Nailed this. I believe that we have reached over 500M people worldwide through the mass media. Considering that the Israeli government spent $2.2M on the New7Wonders Competition, the results from Spencer Tuninck’s         privately funded Art Installation seems to be tipping the scale. Here are some metrics from Google:

    5.     Considering that Spencer forbid me from dating anyone seriously before the installation and also forbid me to pose – I guess that time will tell if that was wise advise. I am open to suggestions.

In conclusion, this was one of the most exciting projects of my life. I am pleased by how well it turned out and the impact it made on the participants, Israel, and the world at large. Spencer Tunick’s love and admiration for Israel shined in his work and words to the media. Please follow his advise as ambassadors for the beautiful and peaceful people of Israel and the environment, and make sure to Vote for the Dead Sea. http://www.votedeadsea.com &  http://www.new7wonders.com/vote-2

A big thanks to everyone from the bottom of my heart. Hoping to broadcast more good news in the future when the art is ready to be shared and the awards and prints distributed.

    Love - Ari

P.S. - stay tuned for my next philanthropic adventures
