Penultimate update - Books are here, signed, numbered, and selling!

This looks to be the next-to-last update for this Kickstarter campaign; I'll probably do one more when the limited edition of Never Let the Right One Go sells out. Could be in a couple of weeks, could be in several years...

The news: I received the books right on schedule (UPS's schedule) and, because I'd done a lot of prep-work, was able to get right to signing and numbering them (well, right after dinner) as soon as they arrived. See below, the ... interesting? ... video of me signing and numbering every single copy of the limited edition. If, for some reason, you or someone you know doesn't believe that I signed and numbered each book twice (once per novel) or that I rolled dice and flipped a coin to determine what number each one would be, you can show them this video, and they shall know the truth:

Did you notice your names there, in the video, backers?

I've already sold Sophia #1 (to my sister, the #1 collector of my books) and Emily #1 (to Sandi, the first backer who followed the backer-only link), and I'm sending 2 copies each to the photographers whose work I used on the covers, so that leaves only 44/50 copies. Ever. Order yours today!

When I pledged 2 weeks ago, I never thought you'd make it - I figured my pledge would end up like raising my hand to say "I wish games like this would actually get made." --Now it looks like I'll actually get to play? I don't know whether coming from so far behind, and so quickly, to such a high goal, breaks any new Kickstarter records, but it certainly deserves some recognition - You guys have done a great job with getting the word out in the last week or so. Keep it up; only a few more hours remain; we can do this!

Quick update: Books are on their way (to me)

Just wanted to make a quick update, here: The limited edition has been printed and shipped (a couple days later than I'd hoped) and is scheduled to be delivered to me by UPS on Monday, May 14th, 2012. I've also worked with Apple to resolve the issue that was preventing Emily from being available for pre-order via iBooks, so that should be appearing on the iBookstore within the next day or two. (Sophia is available for pre-order now, if you have an iOS device!) I have to wait until the release day to upload to the other eBook stores (Kindle, nook, Smashwords), but I'll be doing that a little after midnight Friday night (Saturday morning), so the eBooks should be available almost everywhere, with any luck, on their "official" publication date. I've also already begun podcasting the audio version (nothing new for you, since I posted the first two chapters here already, until after 5/12) on the Modern Evil Podcast, so be sure you subscribe if you prefer an audio version.

Also: Although I won't have the hardcovers in hand until the 14th, I'll be posting the backers-only order link here on the 12th, so you can order on release day if you're eager - I won't process the payments until I actually have your books in hand, and I should be able to take them to the Post Office no later than end-of-business Tuesday (possibly late Monday night), which is about the same shipping turnaround you'd get by ordering on a Saturday, anyway. Look forward to a (partially) time-lapse video of me signing and numbering all the books, some time next week.

Thanks for your support. I hope I'm not bugging you with these updates; you were interested enough to pledge money, so I'm guessing you're interested in hearing about the project coming to fruition. There should only be three (at most 4) more communications from me on this book, after today. Then Never Let the Right One Go will be completed and out in the wild to seek its fortune (and I'll be focused on my next project). If you think you'd be interested in by future projects, be sure to follow me on at least one of: my blog, Google+, Facebook, and/or Twitter.

    Proof of hardcover received

Here's a quick video I shot (with my iPhone) of unboxing & flipping through the proof copy of the hardcover edition of Never Let the Right One Go. I'll have to carefully go through it, page by page, but at first glance it appears everything is in order & I'll be able to approve it and order the limited edition of 50 as planned, probably tomorrow. I'll post another update when I have the limited edition - I'm thinking maybe a video of me signing & numbering stacks of books (no, not all of them & in realtime, but there's dice-rolling involved so it should be interesting), along with a backers-only update with a link to order copies at the originally-offered/reward-rate.

I try to stand by my word (and my creative projects) as much as possible. This has been my fourth Kickstarter campaign; two got funded, two didn't. For this project I planned it with the realistic possibility of failure in mind, so a successful Kickstarter would mostly have meant the difference between a small print run and a potentially huge one; I'm guessing the market for YA vampire romance is about saturated, though. (Or those readers aren't on Kickstarter, and they'll buy the eBooks later - that's my hope.) For my other failed campaign, it just put the writing on the back-burner (incidentally, while I wrote Never Let the Right One Go) and I'm now working on it again in a new form - I'm about 25% of the way through writing it, and may be able to post an update to that project (over a year later!) within the next few months... though not having money for that one means no print run: I've revamped it into something digital-only, for now. Luckily for this project, another fundraising effort I did just before launching the Kickstarter went better than expected, and once again it's sales of my artwork which are funding the publication of my books! Too bad about the other projects you pledged toward, though; I wish more creators would see a failed campaign as a different sort of kick-start, sending them back to the drawing board to figure out how to make their ideas work, whether by finding another source of funding of modifying the idea or just changing the way they talk about it. (I'm still not very good at the marketing side, which can make all the difference in getting people interested in your work.)

Nearly there; sent the files to the printer today!

Although we didn't reach the funding goal for the Kickstarter, as I indicated in the campaign's description, the publication of Never Let the Right One Go is certain—and today it became even more certain, as I sent the finished, polished interior and cover-image files to my printer. Some time next week I'll have a proof copy of the hardcover flipbook in hand! I'm pretty excited about it. I'll probably post some photos, or a short video, of the proof copy when it arrives. (Even if it's not quite perfect, and needs some revisions.) Hopefully I won't have to wait the whole week for it...

I've never produced a hardcover book before, so I'm a little nervous about how it's going to turn out, but I've published a couple dozen other books (including various editions of some of them) in paperback and other formats, so I'm also pretty confident in the quality of my work. It's tug of war inside me, like the conceptual tug of war between Sophia and Emily. Regardless of how the (first?) proof turns out, I'm now sure I can get the book into tip-top shape in time enough to have copies on hand for Phoenix Comicon (May 24-27th, 2012) and, of course, meet my initial goals for "delivering rewards". I've set an official release date of May 12, 2012 for the eBook, audiobook, and (tentatively) the hardcover release.

Speaking of rewards: After much work with my spreadsheets, and balancing of finances, and in light of having had to pay for the whole thing myself, I've settled on a price of $35/copy (plus tax & shipping) for the signed, numbered limited edition hardcover flipbook containing both novels. But: Once I have the books in hand, I'll make a Backers-only update here with a link to where my Kickstarter Backers will be able to order the hardcover for only $30/copy (shipping included)—the same price as the reward level you may have pledged at! Look for that email on or around May 12th.

One final thing: I've added Sophia and Emily to Goodreads, so if you have an account there, you can add them to your to-read list—and then review them, once you have your copies. (Let me know if you want ARCs of the eBooks for review!) For small press and independent publishers like me, a few well-thought-out reviews can go a long way, and even just adding the books to your list puts them in front of your Goodreads friends, spreading the word with very little effort. I'd really appreciate it if you could take a moment and add them. Goodreads links: Emily | Sophia

    Thanks,

Glad to hear you are moving forward regardless of Kickstarter not working out! You're the first of the one's I've backed that didn't succeed who showed initiative after the fact ;)

    First audiobook chapters

I started recording the audiobook version of Never Let the Right One Go this week, and I've put together the first chapter of each book to share with backers and other people considering backing the project before time runs out. Each chapter is about fifteen minutes. Hopefully, hearing the first chapters will whet your appetite for the rest of the books.

Chapter 1 of Emily, Never Let the Right One Go (14.4Mb MP3)

Chapter 1 of Sophia, Never Let the Right One Go (16.1Mb MP3)
