    Ahoy!

    Dear Friends,

After eleven months of eager anticipation, in just a few days I will finally embark on a very exciting expedition with the 5 Gyres Institute. For one full month, I will be part of a thirteen person crew on a 72-foot sail boat, sailing from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil to Cape Town, South Africa to study plastic pollution that has made its way from land to the middle of the South Atlantic. None of this would be possible if it weren’t for your generosity and support!

Though I will not have internet access while at sea, I am hoping to send updates via satellite phone which will be posted to my blog (http://plasticconfetti.blogspot.com/) by friends and family for all who are interested in following my progress. In addition, you may follow the expedition here:

I look forward to sharing this adventure with you and thank you again for your interest and support of these important issues!

    Ahoy!

Thank you, Lisa! While traveling in Australia, I was given the nickname "Dolphin Queen"! I missed the film in the theaters, so have been calling my local video rental every week asking for it. They finally had it in today, and I rented it this afternoon! Amazing synchronicity! What’s happening in Taiji breaks my heart. I would love to know what can be done to help .

ongrats, Mary! Glad to be a part of your important journey. My husband was part of the filmmaking team that made "The Cove" documentary (he wrote the script)... about the dolphin trade in Japan and high levels of mercury poisoning our oceans. Maybe you've seen the film?

    11 HOURS TO GO!

    Dear Friends,

Thank you so much for everything you have done to support my project! In just twelve days, I have successfully raised $3,310 toward the research of plastic pollution in the North Atlantic. As many of you know, I have been hoping to do a trip like this for several years now. Having the support of so many friends, family members, colleagues, as well as complete strangers - is incredibly exciting! I thank each of you for the part you have played in helping me get so close to being a part of this important research. With eleven hours until my deadline, and only another $1,690 needed, I am thrilled to be so close to reaching my goal!

I am keeping my fingers crossed and hope to be in touch with some wonderful news very soon!

    Thank you,

    Mary
