Different strokes for different folks, I might add. What might seem egotistical to one person (signing a CD, oh, the horror!) might be genuinely interesting to someone else. When we put on the Gonzales Cantata, I had the entire cast sign five posters. We kept one, we gave one to Rachel Maddow, and I put the other three up for sale at the merch booth for $50 a piece. I personally wanted to ask for more than that, but was talked down to $50. We sold one on our second show, and after the third show, the other two didn't even last a matter of minutes. The money from the sales of these posters went directly to the performers, who got a percentage of the show profits. Anyhow, all that aside, I feel that bringing Facebook drama back to the kickstarter page isn't the best response. If you're going to enable this discussion, enable it on that social network, rather than on this centralized fundraising/merchandising site.

Re-posting their comments on this blog only gives these people more attention. These sound like people who have never put any effort into producing an artistic venture on their own. You could make the same available-cheaper-elsewhere argument about the gifts NPR gives you when you pledge money to them, but the gifts are not the point. Frankly, none of the options here come off to me as egotistical - it sounds as though whoever was complaining was doing a little bit of projecting. If you want to succeed in any music venture these days, you need to connect with your fans and give them a reason to buy. (Yes, I'm ripping that right off of techdirt.com, they've done excellent studies into this.) Pay no mind to this vocal minority, they offer no good insight and their criticism isn't the least bit constructive.
