Kristen Schwarz

Los Angeles, CA

I'm a writer, an artist, and until recently, an educator. I’m fascinated by the conundrums of travel writing and time travel. I have one cat who is appropriately named Genghis Khan.

Link seems to be broken, http://www.blurb.com/bookstore/detail/2352475 works better for me.

Cool book, can't wait to get it!

    Interview with Erodoto108

    Hi Friends!

I'm excited to let you know that I'll be including an interview with members of the editorial staff of Erodoto108 in Positano: Dream Place! Erodoto108 is an Italian travel magazine whose goal is to promote "awareness and [be] able to communicate the values of other cultures through the eyes of travelers of the present and the past."

In the interview, they discuss the nature of travel writing, the current state of Italy, and their own tips for successful travel in Italy. The interview is in English.

Even if you don't speak much Italian (like me!), I bet you'll still appreciate the beautiful design of their most recent publication, which is available for free download on their homepage.

Shout out to fellow Kickstarter Emile Klein for introducing me to Erodoto108.

    Thanks everyone!
    Kristen

    New Blog

    Hi Friends,

First, I want to thank everyone who has contributed since my last update:

    Thank you!

Second, there's a new blog post up at my Positano blog for you to check out. It's about Jack Finney's book Time and Again and about interweaving text and image in travel writing as well as what happens when there are really a lot of details in your narrative.

Wherever you are, I hope the weather is treating you well!

    Thanks again,
    Kristen

Hi Andrea, Thanks so much for this information, and I'm relieved March is a good time to go. I've heard that we'll be there right before tourist season really starts. One of the things that I find so interesting about Positano is that it's a very old place, dating at least back to the time of Emperor Tiberius, but like a lot of other tourist sites in Italy, it's been encouraged by the tourist industry to build a sort of timeless version of itself that may never have existed. Henry James wrote this over a hundred years ago: "Nothing is more easy to understand than a certain displeasure on the part of the young Italy of to-day as being looked at by all the world as a kind of soluble pigment. Young Italy, preoccupied with its economical and political future, must be heartily tired of being accounted picturesque." I will definitely take your advice and explore the surrounding areas, hopefully including Ravello. I only wish I could be there longer! Thanks again.
