What KP Devlin is Thankful For

Tomorrow is Thanksgiving Day here in the USA, so it's appropriate that I express at this moment what I'm thankful for. Obviously I'm thankful that I'm able to spend my days doing what I love (and do) best, which is making music. But more specifically, for the purpose of this update, I'm thankful that I have family and friends who care enough about me and believe in my talent enough to pitch in and support my work.

Each of you has made a contribution to the making of this album. Each of you took the time to say (or think), "Hey that KP Devlin dude is alright. Let me play a part in helping him complete his next project." And very soon (meaning next week) I'll be able to show my thanks by sending you your CD's and other rewards. If you plan on attending the CD Release on December 3, I will simply deliver your merchandise to you personally at the party (most likely with either a hug or a handshake and a smile). If you're unable to attend, please let me know your mailing address and I will mail a package to you.

I'll close for now by saying Happy Thanksgiving (for those outside the USA, I hope you have a great Thursday), and I'll be in touch soon.

CD Release Party - Official Announcement

    Hello all,

I've just officially booked the location and date for the Knowledge & Power CD Release Party. It will be held on Saturday, December 3rd, 8:00pm at Sunita Bar, located at 106 Norfolk St. (between Delancey & Rivington) on the Lower East Side.

I just got back from meeting with Sunita - the owner of the bar and a very sweet person - and she is excited to host the party and to meet all of you. She'll be spinning the Knowledge & Power CD in the bar, as well as blending two special drinks for the evening, entitled Liquid Knowledge and Power Potion!!! Though recipes for these two drinks have not been finalized, I would venture to guess that Liquid Knowledge will involve vodka and Power Potion will be tequila based. In any case, I assure you they will be delicious. As are all of the drinks on her drink menu - she is a highly skilled mixologist! I think you'll all love the spot too - it's got a great vibe.

So please mark your calendars for December 3, and plan on getting there anytime from 8pm onwards. I'm sure we'll be there till late in the night. I want to see you there! It's going to be a fun evening!

    Album Completed!

I write to you this evening with wonderful news. My album is officially complete! It was mastered today by Joe Lambert at his JLM Sound in Brooklyn, and as always, the session with Joe was a delight. The album sizzles, shines, sparkles and soars. Huge thanks to Joe, and also to Bryce Goggin for making a few last minute adjustments to some of the mixes.

Now all that's left is to send it off to be replicated and packaged. This process typically takes about three weeks, so I should have copies available by mid November. At that point, I'll be able to start sending you your CD's, as well as your bonus reward items... If you're planning to attend the CD Release party on December 3, and would prefer to wait till then to get your CD, that's fine too. Still not 100% certain of the locale for the CD Release party, but I'm leaning towards a tiny little bar on the Lower East Side called Sunita. I will post another update once that has been determined.

Let me once again thank each and every one of you for your generous support. Without you, I wouldn't have been able to make this record, so it means the world to me. I hope you'll all feel a sense of satisfaction upon listening to these ten songs. It's a job well done, and we did it together!

    Stay tuned for further updates...

    Day 3 of Mixing

Greetings from Trout Recording Studio in Brooklyn! I'm here with engineer Bryce Goggin, who is mixing the record. So far we've finished 5 of the 10 songs and I am absolutely ecstatic with the results thus far! We'll get to one more tune today and then will finish mixing on Tuesday.

In the meantime, I still haven't heard from many of you re: the December 3 party. Please let me know ASAP whether or not you can attend, as I need to have a rough idea of the head count in order to choose a venue. So let me know, please...

    OK, back to work!

Knowledge & Power CD Release Party - December 3

    Hello all,

I know I had mentioned November 12 before as a potential date for the CD Release Party, but that date was just cutting it a little too close, as I'll be sending the project to the duplication plant right around October 20 and there's a chance I might not have the final product until after November 12...

Now with the holidays bearing down on us, scheduling gets to be a bit tricky. But right now, I'm looking at my calendar, and Saturday, December 3 is standing out as the best possible day to have the party. Now I realize that many of you will have other commitments to family or potential travel plans, and also many of you do not live in the New York tri-state area, but I would so love to see as many of you as possible at this party!

In trying to decide where to have it, I need to get an idea of how many people will actually be able to attend. So I ask each of you to please contact me ASAP, either through kickstarter or by emailing me directly at kp@kpdevlin.com, and let me know if you will be able to attend the party on December 3. Keep in mind if you are reading this in your email program that you will have to log on to kickstarter to respond to this message. You can't just hit "reply to."

If anyone has any suggestions on a good venue for the party, please feel free to let me know. Thanks and I look forward to seeing you soon!

Recording Complete / CD Release Party Tentative Date

Just wanted you all to know that recording of "Knowledge & Power" is complete! It's all ready for mixing at Trout Recording in Brooklyn now, which will begin on October 5. Mixing should be done on October 12 and then mastering with mastering engineer extraordinaire, Joe Lambert, will take place on October 17. At that point, it will be sent to Austin, TX for duplication and packaging, and barring any unforeseen issues, would then be ready approximately 2-3 weeks later.

At this point, I am starting to think about dates for the CD release party, which I hope many of you can attend. Assuming the above schedule is met, November 12 is a potential date for the party. If that date is definitely NOT good for any of you, please comment here on this page and we'll try to find a date that works for as many of you as possible. I really want to share the celebration with all of you. Without you, I'd never have been able to make this record. In any case, the venue for the party is TBA. For those of you in the NYC area that have suggestions on venues, etc., please feel free to comment here or email me directly.

    Signing off for now,

    KP

    Mixing Dates Set

    Hello everyone,

Should be wrapping up recording on the record within the next week or so. And I have just booked 4 days for mixing (October 5,6,7 & 11) with engineer Bryce Goggin at Trout Recording in Brooklyn. Bryce has mixed my last two records, and is sure to do an excellent job on this one as well. I'm really looking forward to that.

So we're getting pretty close to the end now... Hope you're all enjoying the end of summer.

    Two Recording Sessions To Go

    Hi everyone,

It's been a few weeks since the last update, so I just wanted to let you know that I'm now two recording sessions away from completing the recording of "Knowledge & Power." The most recent session was devoted to keyboard work on "Where the Icy Waters Flow." This was a real treat - Andy Burton laid down a number of tracks, including Hammond B-3, Mellotron and some other vintage keyboards, at his Tannery Row Recording in Hoboken, NJ. The subtle, effective, and tasty parts he added where the proverbial icing (pun intended) on this song's cake. And at just under 14 minutes long, it's one sizable cake, indeed.

Next up, the bookends of this album - "Let the Whole Thing Go" and "Midnight Blue" - both need some horns added. Over the next two weeks, those final sessions will occur (here at my own Hurling Dervish Studio) with none other than Peck Allmond providing the arrangements and performance of these parts. After that, recording will be done and we can focus on getting this thing mixed, mastered and ready for public consumption!

    Stay tuned...

    Recording Nearly Complete/The Next Step

    Hello everyone,

Good news! The end is in sight in terms of recording "Knowledge & Power!" Two tracks need electric guitar, two more need horns and one needs some keyboards, and then the recording process will be 100% complete!

The final budget for recording was right at $6,000. I'll be putting the surplus of $593 from our campaign towards mixing. However, we're going to have to do a little waiting now. Mixing, mastering and CD replication will come to an additional $6,000. My original plan, if you'll recall, was to do another kickstarter campaign at this point to cover all of that stuff. However, I just can't bear to ask you, my supporters, for more money after you've already given so generously. It just doesn't feel right. So I'm going to start pinching my pennies and saving whatever I can so that I can finish this project by the end of this calendar year.

Now, if there are any of you out there who would like to help me finish, I'm more than happy to receive checks, money orders, cash, etc. Simply contact me and we can work that out. However, I'm not going to beg and harass you for weeks on end like I had to do for the initial campaign. Any contributions from here on out will be regarded as "above and beyond" to say the least. I'll say no more on that subject, but rest assured, the CD will get done! And I'm fairly certain that it can be done in time for the holidays.

Thanks for reading and I hope all of you are enjoying the summer.

    Mariachi Time

Today was the first day for recording horns. Always fun to add brass arrangements to the tunes. In recent years, I've grown more and more fond of the trumpet, particularly two trumpets playing in harmony (and occasionally in unison) for that gorgeous mariachi/southwestern sound. And my go-to guy, for anything brass related, is Peck Allmond. Today Peck came over and added some fantastic trumpet parts to "The Man From Guadalajara," which is now completely recorded. And now, I'm in the mood for Mexican food and tequila!

Tomorrow morning, Adam Armstrong is coming by to play bass on "We Know Where We're Going." And then Andrew Carillo will be adding electric guitars to that song as well as "Where the Icy Waters Flow."

In a few weeks, Peck will come back to add brass to "Midnight Blue" and "Let the Whole Thing Go." And the only other thing left to do in terms of recording, will be to have Andy Burton add some Hammond B-3, as well as possibly piano and Mellotron to a few of the songs.

So it's coming along nicely. At this rate, I hope to be mixing by September. Thanks for reading and stay tuned for more updates!
