Posted project update #4A Long-Overdue Update
Post CommentOr, WTF happened with the film?!
Hey all, sorry for being out of communication about this. I wanted to get back in touch and tell you what happened and what's going to happen.
The film release was derailed by music clearances. What happened was that we thought that the music we were using was something that we had a license to use, but as it turned out, we didn't. Licensing it was more than our entire budget for the project, and the vendors weren't really willing to play ball. It was basically a big mess.
What we ended up doing was finding music that didn't require a license for one reason or another. Some of it has a liberal license. Other pieces are original artists who were generous enough to contribute. This is harder than it sounds when you've already cut the film to certain music and you have to go in and replace it with other music.
The net result of this is that, while the film itself has been ready to go for over 6 months, we're just now ready to re-apply the music. That will take a few more weeks. Then we'll be releasing it and sending out all the thank you goodies and such.
At any rate, everyone's been extraordinarily patient, and we want to thank you all for that. When the film is complete, we'll try to find a place to do a viewing here in SF, and we'll invite everyone who's able to make it. Our way of saying thanks for being so patient.
Again, our sincerest apologies for everything, but we're down, not out!
Talk soon,
Dave and Doug

Posted project update #3Thanks and New Commercial
Post CommentHowdy all,
Thanks to everyone who's contributed. We've made our goal! A special thank you to Jonathan from Accel Partners and RightRental who made up a significant amount of the balance.
Wanted to let everyone know that Vicente has switched out the main commercial on our Kickstarter page for a slideshow of stills and clips from the shoot. Check it out - it's a cool look at what went on behind the scenes. I'm attaching the old commercial to this post for anyone who still wants access to it.
We'll begin posting clips from the weekend soon for our Backers, as we've already got almost all 60 hours of footage sorted and classified. And we're about to begin roughing out the documentary short. More on that soon.
As soon as we arrive on a final name for the project, we'll be redirecting folks to a new site for it with a new domain name. Stay tuned for that update.
Thanks again,
DK -

Posted project update #2Last day of shooting!
We had such a busy day yesterday, no one managed to get back here. Today we're going to catch everyone trying to finish up their projects and presentations in preparation for the big ending for the weekend.
I'll have Vicente upload some stills of our shoot later on, and later on this week, we'll post some clips from the weekend. We'll be leaving here with about 60 hours of footage!
A few of us have been on location essentially continuously from Friday till we're out of here tonight. It's been a great experience, and I think we'll be really happy to reach the goal.
More soon.

Post CommentOur team arrived today in three waves. The first wave got here at noon and rechecked the light levels in every room, then staked out some space for us. The second wave came with a truck full of equipment. The third wave was a van filled with team members.
I don't think anybody here was prepared for how much equipment and how many people it takes to shoot a whole weekend of footage and event, but folks are being awesome with it.
I was also surprised how many people really WANTED to be on camera. I sort of assumed that that people would be more private and reserved, but here they are being alive and energetic on camera. It's pretty amazing so far.
We've got participants for the weekend trickling in now, and there are four crews on the floor covering them meeting for the first time. Looking forward to getting some early clips.
Stay tuned!

Question: Isn't the biggest expense in PCR the operating costs in terms of supplies and reagents and the like? I don't want to get down on the project, because I'd love to see a device like this for the developing world, but a $4,000 unit on an equipment lease is only about $75 a month. That's about 1/10th what I think you'd pay to keep it stocked for use 8 hours a day, 5 days a week. Do you have a plan for resolving the supply cost and other TCO factors? The answer might be that, at scale (given that this would be accessible to any doctor's office and such), the cost of supplies would fall as demand for them rose to a point where a large enough market of competitors arose. Again, love the idea. I think you should go forward, and when I get paid, I think I'll kick in a pledge. Definitely would like to see this succeed.

Congrats on securing the funding necessary for the Women 2.0 Startup Weekend documentary!!
