Come See A History of the Sky at Maker Faire This Weekend!

I'll be showing A History of the Sky along with some of my panoramic time-lapse pieces at Maker Faire this weekend, May 19+20 in San Mateo, CA:

    http://makerfaire.com/pub/e/7914

It will be projected nice and huge (about 18' wide) in a big dark room, similar to last year.  I hope you all can make it!

P.S. if anyone is interested in a volunteer opportunity (a few easy breezy hours in exchange for a Maker Faire weekend pass), drop me a line! (ken@murphlab.com).

Full-Year "History of the Sky" Video Online!

At long last, I've made a 360-day version of "A History of the Sky" available online:

Originally, I intended only to show the full-year version nice and huge as a projected piece, but it actually works well online in full screen/1080p mode.  Here's the direct youtube link.

Why 360 days?  It makes a nicer rectangle!

    I hope you enjoy it!

Showing "A History of the Sky" (and Other Work) Tonight in SF

It's been a while since I've posted an update here on Kickstarter... I apologize to all of you who follow along here!  I've been keeping busy working on A History of the Sky as well as a few other projects, which you can read about on my blog (www.murphlab.com).

Tonight, I'll be showing a single-projector version of a 360-day History of the Sky, along with a few other time-lapse pieces at area Carl Pisaturo's studio/workshop/micro-museum, Area 2881.  Carl will be showing his collection of luninokinetic sculpture, robot performers, and 3D photos, and Dave Johnson will have his hand-made wooden automata.

The location is 2881 23rd St. (at Florida), from 8PM-midnight.  It's free, and part of MAPP, the Mission Arts Performance Project.  It will be very cool event, and it would be great to see some Kickstarter supporters there.  More info:

    Purchased projectors, and other updates

I've purchased a lovely pair of Optoma HD20 projectors (see photo). These are 1080p DLP projectors, and are really bright, which makes them well-suited for this project. I went with DLP (over LCD) because I want people to be able to look at the piece up close, as well as from afar, and DLP doesn't have that "screen-door effect" found with LCD projectors. I've done some preliminary tests in stretching a vey large (3840 x 1080) movie across both projectors, and it looks great!

Lately my focus has been on some post-production and cleanup of captured time-lapse images, such as taking the flicker out of the footage, which is a common problem with time-lapse photography. This has been very labor-intensive, but with positive results, and I'm on track to have that done before my After Effects trial expires!

Finally, I've sent out all the phtographic prints and postcards to those of you who provided me with a mailing address. For those of you who didn't... you know who you are! Your prints are packaged up and ready to go, as soon as I know where to send 'em.

    Thank you for your patience!

It's been a little while since I posted an update here, so I want to give you all an update regarding the progress of the project, as well as when backers can expect their rewards.

But first, let me apologize for the delay... this project got momentarily put on pause with the recent release of my book, "Blinkybugs." (it's actually a combination book and kit that teaches kids and adults to make their own blinking, electronic insects. More info at www.blinkybug.com). It's been quite a juggle, but I'm now able to carve out the time to march forward with the completion of "A History of the Sky."

I'm very happy to announce that I hit the one-year milestone at the end of July, and the camera is continuing to collect images from the roof of the Exploratorium. There is a fair amount of post-processing work required to create the full year-long piece, and I'm currently in the process of obtaining the projectors and other equipment for display. I'll be providing more information regarding where one can see the finished piece soon!

Regarding rewards, the digital stills are printed, matted, and ready to ship. For those of you who have one of these coming, I'll be contacting you shortly for your shipping address. I'm very happy how they came out and I think you'll really like them! The postcards will also be sent shortly. Finally, the screen saver is coming together soon, and I'll provide an update when this is available. Again, I *realy* appreciate you patience, as well as your support which make this project possible.

Many thanks, and more info soon!

    Ken

    Success!

I'm extremely happy to announce that my project has been successfully funded through this Kickstarter campaign. I am incredibly grateful to everyone who's contributed! Keep an eye on this site, as I'll continue to post updates as I make progress towards building the display piece of this project.

Also, please stay tuned regarding the pledge rewards that many of you will soon be receiving. I'll need a mailing address from some of you so I can send you the goods, so you'll be hearing from me soon. It may take a few weeks for me to ship everything out.

    Thanks everyone!
