    Putting The Book Together

Well — all the spreads are done and I hand cut and pasted and folded the entire book together. It's effectively done. (Here I didn't trim the top and bottom cause I got lazy, so the final book will be shorter then you see here with more edge bleed.)

A bit of stuff to go in a small afterward — thanks mostly — and final business with the printer. That's it.

Thanks for your patience! I know I'm behind. We're working hard.

    Last Stages

Well — I *think the book design is done. There are a couple of tweaks and tucks to be done, and a visit to the printer in a few days.

I had started to send off photo rewards but, in the interests of efficiency — I'm going to hold off on sending more at this point and get an ETA on the book. Shouldn't be long so sending all the reward at once seems the bright thing to do.

I want to thank you for your patience and of course — for your support of this little big project.

    Small Note

    Hello!

    A couple of small notes.

First — the final selections were made and the design of the book is well underway, which is fantastic.

Second — the studio is now more of a shipping & receiving center. I've learned more than I wanted to know about shipping materials, postal rules, packing supplies, and at-home postage printing and that Uline is the McMaster of the industrial loading dock. I nearly have an excuse to purchase a pallet truck. Those of you who are expecting prints and books will get them as separate shipments. It's just easier that way. In that case it means you'll get the prints before the books. Those of you who got the lovely photo postcards, they're coming soon!

Third — we were featured in a small nook of the Internet Universe amongst the techie-geeky community of visual effects cognoscenti. I'll take whatever I can get. In this case, it was for the VFX I did for the Hello Skater Girl video what seems like ages ago.

    Final Selects

Well. I did the almost impossible to do. I whittled down a few hundred photos to this bunch you see here. And for those of you with a vested interest who are zooming in to see what was picked, know that you can't see everything here. And don't ask. Wait for it.

It tells the story of a year tagging around with a bunch of skater girls and does it in a way that doesn't feel like a catalog. I feel good about it, and I think you'll enjoy it as well.

So, now it's in the hands of my book designer.

In the meantime, the studio is becoming a bit of a shipping & receiving center as I prepare the prints and postcards to go out. It's a daunting task. It's easier to say what you'll do on this scale than actually do it. I knew that, but somehow that didn't stop me from saying I'd do it. And now I'm doing it.

    Thanks again for your support!

    Posting, Picking, Pruning

    Hello Again,

Well, we're still at it. Picking photographs from amongst the first 2,000+ wasn't too difficult, I have to say. Picking photographs from the next 400 has been a bit, well —  emotional.

I have picked the photos for the postcards, rewards and special rewards — that wasn't nearly as hard for some reason.

Designing a book is hard though. I didn't think it'd be this hard. It's been made increasingly challenging particularly as I admire lots of fantastically and creatively designed books — the variations on size, format, layout, materials are exciting and daunting.

But, I'm determined to get done by the end of March. Which means I'll have to be a bit more ruthless than I have been.

Thanks again for your support! I'm going to go back to picking photos.

    Book Design? T'ain't Easy, Is't?

Well, no. It isn't. But — it really is quite a bit of fun. And that's what I've been doing — besides all the other things I have to do. And to help with all that I've hired a bright young fella to help with the book design called Sebastian Bettencourt. So that's a relief. We've been talking about the project for a couple of weeks and then he stopped by so we could sit down and look through the material. I pulled a ton of books of the shelf that  I found inspiring and some that I really didn't care much for and we started focusing in on some ideas and principles for the book.

And then he told me to start printing everything. And then he left.

    So I've been printing everything.

I'm up to — about the beginning of March 2011? It just about filled the wall in the back studio. And I shot full through until — January 2012. And I'm sorta being picky.

It's going to take time. But it's moving forward.

Second bit — the 16x20 prints many of you selected are being printed right now. That's also a lot of printing. But you'll get those before long.

Okay. That's it. You can read more about the book design on the project blog here:

    http://helloskatergirl.com/2012/02/01/clustering-photos-on-the-wall/

Oh, one more thing. For those of you who are expecting a print, please be sure to respond to a survey from Kickstarter asking for your preferred mailing address. Or, if you prefer, you can email me directly rather than shove your address into a database container somewhere that may crack and spill all over the information superhighway. Just send it to julian@helloskatergirl.com

    Thanks.
