Posted project update #9The End?
Hello Friends,
Finally, I have some time to send a real update! As many of you know I just graduated about a week and a half ago so the past few days have been pretty busy with wrapping up the school stuff (and working on the rest of the rewards).
For the show I made a little scenario video to explain the whole system in a quick way, including the demo-able prototype parts and the more speculative parts:
Our final show, 4 Hours Solid, was also quite successful. Lots of people came by and seemed to enjoy playing with the portals.
There is also now a site dedicated specifically to the project which goes into more detail about everything, but in a sort of more organized way:
http://portals-and-friends.com/
And for those of you who were still waiting for the rest of your reward(s), good news, I finally mailed them (booklets & augmenters) off today! Sorry it took so long to get these out. I was literally still tweaking parts of the system on the day of the show. I also intend to post an instructable online as well when I get more time, but that will have to wait till later. The boxes also have a nicer label with the backers' names on it now but I forgot to take a pic of it.

Teleportaling around town
Also, if you missed 4 Hours Solid, don't worry, you still have more chances to see them! Portals (and friends) will be traveling around LA this month to a few events:
UCLA Game Art Festival
May 9th & 10th
(FREE!! and lots of other cool projects!)
http://festival.games.ucla.edu/Mindshare 50
May 12th
(Not free, but lots of cool stuff!)
http://mindshare50.com/(and maybe some other events, but I'm not sure yet!)
The End?
So I guess that's technically the "end" of the project, although I guess it's more like the start of a lot more. People keep asking me what my plans are post-graduation and I'm still not really sure. Mostly I'm just riding on the momentum that's already been started. I'm pretty excited they've been so well received and are already going on tour, even though technically I feel like they're not really done. But I think my next phase will be more about sharing the project with people in various forms.

Jayne, Glad to hear you are nearing the completion of your project. Any idea when you will be able to complete your commitment to me for my $$$ support?

Yes, sorry for the delay in wrapping up the rewards! After this show is over I'll only be working on finishing the rest of the rewards so I should be able to send them out by the end of the month.

Posted project update #7Portals (and friends)

Lots of things have been going on this month. I started working on creating my own characters and animation, although that part still needs a lot of work. The funny thing is that's the part of the whole project I'm probably most qualified to be working on but it's the part I'm procrastinating on the most..
But I've also been spending some time thinking about the entire system and the other things that could be living in this world.
What if the little characters also existed in the real world at full scale? What if they could be controlled from inside the Portal world?
Also, what would it be like to enter the parallel world from the "regular" version of street view?
I also took one of the Portals to the South Pasadena Middle School's Mini Maker Faire for some play testing.

And it got me thinking about how people might begin to customize their "grabatar." Here's a few from some folks in the studio.

I also had my big week 9 committee review on Monday, which went fairly well I think. It was generally well received and we mostly talked about how to frame/contextualize the project for the final show (which you are all invited to. more details about the show to follow when it gets closer).
Technical Notes:
Yesterday I finally figured out how to get the video feed to transmit via the local network AND using only one camera instead of two! It's much more reliable, faster, and better quality video.
Also my buddy Salvador is helping me with some code stuff to hopefully make a system to allow me to deal with the content more dynamically.
Rewards:
I know I'm a little behind on finishing up the rest of the rewards for the big spenders! So sorry about that! I promise I haven't forgotten!
That's all..
As always, you can follow along in much more detail on the blog!

Hi Jayne,
I really like the progress you are making and the ideas you are generating in the process.
I wanted to make sure that I didn't miss the "small printed & illustrated step by step guide on how to build your own Portal" - Can you confirm if these have been sent out already? I'm worried that it may get misplaced in the shuffle of everyday life.
Cheers! Looking forward to more posts about your work.

Hi Suzanne,
Don't worry, the printed guide is still coming! It will probably be by the end of April. Sorry for the delay, things just took longer than I thought to figure out, but the guide will be extra awesome!

Posted project update #6Big Milestone!
Post CommentSo the past few weeks I've been trying to figure out how to get the live video feed (so humans can see what's going on) and tracking data (so the computer can see what's going on). Last week I had the video feed sorted out. And this past week I rebuilt my light boxes to do double duty as touch tables by putting a camera inside and using the reactivision framework.

The big issue was that I could do these things separately but not together because it was too hard on my computer. This is most likely because I'm just rerouting a bunch of existing applications together to do things they weren't really meant for. (I'm sure if I knew how to code The One App To Rule Them All I could make it happen more seamlessly. But as it stands now I haven't actually had to code anything, and that actually makes me quite happy). But last night I was finally able to get these two reconciled by tweaking some things, and you can see in the videos below both the tracker and the video feed are being teleportaled.
And so now I feel pretty good that the major technical bits are for the most part sorted out. There will still be lots of other technical bits to figure out as I go but these were the two main issues and now that I know it can work I can start to focus on some of the other aspects like actual content and animation. I'd like to do more than just play with cows all day.
Also, coverage wise:
Portals is one of ten projects in this WIRED / Mercedes promo-contest thing. Looks like some of the other projects are well in the lead but feel free to vote for Portals anyways : ) I'm just happy that Portals is in the running with those other projects, despite the fact that it's a speculative design project and not an actual commercial product.

Jayne: I am happy that you are "finished" with the project, and touring LA; I am sure some other great idea will come out of it as well...Congratulations!
