Winding Down: A Thank You, And A Contest!

    Hi everybody!

Well, we did it. Poorcraft is funded, WAY funded! And the book is in production; Scripts are written or being written, and pages are being penciled, on their way to ink. We've got several months ahead of us of production, but Diana and I had a talk last night, and we wanted to show our appreciation for the amazing support this project's received.

So, Diana's agreed to give away a deluxe, full-color art commission!
If you've already pledged to Poorcraft, your name's already in the hat. If not, well- why not pledge? You'll get a great book, behind-the-scenes updates, AND a chance to win some beautiful art!

I've attached some examples of Diana's art when she's not drawing in the stripped-down, Poorcraft style. She's an incredible skilled and very versatile artist.

Need a drawing of your RPG character? A portrait of your spouse? A tattoo design? Some concept art? Diana's got you covered. And she wants to draw for you.

We'll pick a winner after the Poorcraft project concludes, on December 20th. Pledge now to be included!
Can Poorcraft get to 200% funded? Probably not! But if it does, I'll throw in a commission, too.

Mish-Mash: A project update, why you should still donate, and my other comics!

I want Poorcraft to get to a $10,000 total.
That money wouldn't be for diamond stickpins and solid gold underpants. This is gonna sound weird, but: the more money Poorcraft makes in the pledge period, the more copies I'll be able to afford to give away for free.
If and when Poorcraft reaches ten thousand dollars pledged, I want to earmark between fifty and one hundred copies to be given to organizations YOU guys recommend and suggest. Ashrams, communes, churches, after-school clubs, kibbutzim, scout troops, middle schools, trade schools, art schools, and anyone else who might have 'em. I am serious about wanting this book to get as wide an audience as possible. I am CRAZY like that for REAL.

One hundred books is one thousand dollars' worth of books, in terms of the cover price. How convenient! So guys, this is official: Consider the amount I collect between now and the $10,000 goal dedicated to book giveaways. Spread the word, please! Blog, tweet, tell your friends, post it to any relevant lists or forums you might already belong to. I really want to do this.

Other reasons you should still donate:

    - Pledging is STILL the cheapest chance you will ever have to buy a copy of Poorcraft. No taxes, no shipping. And they'll come signed! Even the PDF of Poorcraft will go up in price when the book is published.

    - Diana Nock will be living off of what I'm paying her to draw Poorcraft. The more I can give her beforehand... which will be half of the pledged total... The more exclusive she can be, and the more quickly the book will be finished.

    - It would be a cool thing to do.
So... yeah, there you have it. Boy, I hope that's motivating.

In totally unrelated news: I just began my yearly Christmas sale! Before I ever thought to do Poorcraft, I was writing and drawing a comic called Templar, Arizona. It's a slice-of-life alternate-history comic, about a strange and different Arizona full of strange and different people. Cultists, anachronists, communists, killers, writers, smut peddlers and drifters. It's a lot of fun, and whenever I finish a chapter online, I edit it, tweak the art, add footnotes and unpublished sketches, and print it up. Those books... And there are currently three... Are available here.

If you like to try before you buy, you can read the whole comic, including the currently-unpublished 4th chapter, starting here. If you order by the tenth, I'm guaranteeing pre-Christmas delivery!

    Thanks, everybody!

    When Poorcraft Goes Over Goal

Wow, guys. So, we're on day 11 of Poorcraft's Kickstarter campaign, and we are less than $500.00 from goal.

First of all: Thank you, thank you, thank you. Your faith and generosity has lit an even BIGGER fire under me over this project, if that's even possible. I've already begun work turning the outlines into scripts for Diana. The first chapter will be about housing.

And secondly, some people have been asking: What will happen when the funding goes over goal? Well... nothing, really. Nothing that isn't already happening! If the total winds up reaching $8,000, It will still be split in half between Diana and myself. $10,000? Split in half. $15,000? We will both faint dead away like antebellum ladies in hoop skirts, and then wake up and still split everything in half. More upfront money for Diana's services, and more money for the printer, meaning more and better-quality books. I don't think the book quality will ever reach hardcover proportions, but the cover and interior paper stock can definitely be spruced up, and the run bumped highed than the originally projected 1500 books.

I hope this answered any lingering questions you guys might have. Stayed tuned! I have more sketches and a chapter outline coming for ya. And thank you again!

Oh my gawd. Plus, some questions answered!

Holy crap you guys. I was really not ready for this at all. I launched the Poorcraft project at 12:30 AM this morning, and now the dumb thing is 25% funded. IT HASN'T EVEN BEEN A DAY.

I must have been really awesome in a previous life.

I wish I could get right down to posting secret, backers-only, developer's blog type stuff, but I'm in San Francisco for the weekend for the Alternative Press Expo. I'll be back in Chicago and rarin' to go Monday! But for now, just a quick mini-FAQ.
Why "urban and suburban" living only? Why not rural?
Well, maybe it's just me, but I think there are a LOT of resources out there for rural self-sufficiency. Many are helpful, but they've made me think "...I live in an apartment building. I can't do that!" while I've read them, too. I like the city, and don't want to move! But I also wanna be a cheapskate while I enjoy everything cities have to offer. I don't think I'm alone.
How "green" is this book going to be?
Incidentally so. Its main concern will not be being environmentally conscious, it just so happens a lot of frugal options are pretty environmentally friendly. The book will advocate bike riding, taking public transportation, living walking-distance from amenities, and growing/cooking food at home. That's good for the planet. But it won't be recommending expensive environmentally friendly options, like installing solar panels and electric cars, or actively denouncing meat-eating and fossil fuel consumption. This isn't about politics, it's about being a cheapskate.
    Need any more artists?
Not right now! But we'll see. If I end up overwhelming poor Diana, I'll let you guys know.

That's it for now. Thanks again, everybody! ARGH, SO EXCITED.
